I am looking at selling my Z4M Coupe and Z43.0si Coupe and getting an e90 M3 (manual!)

What are thoughts on comparison of driving experience.

Main reason is I want more practicality and I want a V8 but one that I can start on a terraced road without pissing off the neighbours. I have a note writing neighbour which has sadly become a factor in deciding against a VXR8 (manual) which would be my preferred choice

Which of your cars is your neighbour writing notes about? Unless you’re current cars are modified an E90 M3 won’t be quieter.

Ha...no they have written notes about other things not noise related. But as I started looking at 6.0 VXR8s with Wortec Exhausts it made me realise that may be a no no

Be warned, I’ve just got an E92, standard exhaust, on start up with the pre cat warming it’s fairly loud, soon quietens down but it has potential to annoy the great unwashed!

The cold start sequence can be coded out (e.g. Evolve) and may be a good idea as it is loud regardless of standard or modified exhaust.

Once coded out, can strongly recommend the 2 pipe mod, as it releases the V8 exhaust sound as it should have been from the factory.

And don’t let that neighbour dictate your car choice!

I went Z4M Roadster to a E92 M3(manual), the M3 feels its weight at low speeds but it does a good job at hiding it at high speeds. For me the M3 has a much more resolved suspension/chassis/ride than the Z4M.

The M3 is the much more accomplished car but it won't feel quite as special as the Z4M with it having four seats. Noise wise the M3 is quiet(apart from cold start).

I might be wrong but I cant imagine a coldstart s65 being anywhere near as brutal as a VXR8 with Walkinshaw or Wortec pipes? I may be wrong??

You’re correct - an aftermarket VXR8 has much greater neighbour-irritating potential than the S65. Get one bought wink

I had two e92 m3's one with a Milltek exhaust the other with a Tubi exhaust, the Milltek was OK but loud on cold start the Tubi was stupidly loud and I'm surprised any of my neighbours talk to me anymore, people stopped me in traffic to ask what it was and the Mrs could hear me from miles away...not good looking back at it, I must have looked and sounded like a right cu.......

If you keep the M3 standard you'll be fine though, I think it sounds best standard myself as you get to hear the induction and all the different notes throughout the rev range rather than just a crazy scream from the exhaust.
