Hi PH.

Does anyone know what's up with modern S55 engine M cars? Seems like engine braking is something BMW have managed to kill.

I have a manual M4 and the biggest disappointment with it (besides the center arm rest and various rattles) is definitely that it has some sort of programming that prevents deceleration when you come off the throttle.

You can literally be going down a 10% hill, change down to 2nd and maintain your speed (sometimes even speed up). I'm sure it's some sort of emissions at play, everyone I know (that knows what engine braking is) with an S55 car agrees with me but no one (even the tuners) seem to have a clue on whether it can be fixed.

For what it's worth I used to have an N55 M135i and that thing would engine brake pretty well when off the throttle and that was with the ZF8 gearbox.

Just curious if anyone knows exactly what the issue is and my hopeful side wonders whether there's a way to fix it...

Thanks

BB

Yes,it takes some getting used to.My M2C DCT is the same.I pondered if it was down to the DCT ‘box but seems it applies to manual cars from what you say.

It’s probably the diff that is the culprit,it is fully electronic controlled.

Turbo engines with a low compression ratio not providing much resistance???

Yeah I believe it's the same regardless (which is odd isn't it!!)

Compared with a friend's M140i side by side (his is EU5) the M4 still has the more aggressive engine braking in every gear, not by much - but it decelerated consistently faster than the 1 which was also a manual. That's something at least.
