Agree - bit of a pet hate of mine too.

The e46 m3 always felt a bit too fat and comfy to me.

Yeah, done that and my question still stands. But if his opinion excites you then fair play.

I've had an E36 M3, E46 M3 and an M4.

The E46 was for me a bit of a sweet spot, it wasn't so fast that I worried about driving hard on the road, it really handled sweetly (more consistent than the E36 and more accessible than the M4). I changed it for a 911 which was a very different drive, probably quicker cross country but had to be driven in a calmer, more accurate way.... I think there is an argument that the E46 is a sweet spot, certainly in my limited experience.

I personally do think that era of cars, the e39 m5 and e46 m3 are the sweet spot. Perfect balance of power, looks, balance and engine.

Each to their own of course, but I'd still take either!

Oh and I should add cost as well - it feels to me as things got incredibly expensive, incredibly quickly after this era.

I'd agree.

I had an F10 M5 from new. Financial hiding aside, it was very quick but in an unconnected/unbiddable way, too heavy, too muted and generally just lacking the tactility that the E46 M3 has.

Of the latest batch of M cars, the M2 holds quite a lot of appeal

I suspect you probably just googled 'Andrew Frankel' and assumed the first person who popped up is the one giving his opinion on M cars.

Back to the cars: I think the E46 is probably right up there in my favourites. I've never owned one but I think I might give it a go one day soon.

What about the Z4M?

Opinion of an old man on an old car. Whatever does it for you I suppose.

Affordable to buy perhaps but not cheap to run/repair. It has very few competitors though so certainly has a USP.

I've had a few E30 and E46 M3 and it's the E30 that I loved the most. Admittedly I had to modify the S14 to release its potential but overall I just found it a great car. It just felt special and the handling was awesome. The E46 was obviously faster but it was also considerably heavier, wider and just didn't evoke the same feel as the E30. It was a great car but it's the E30 I wish was still sat on the driveway.

Yes, of course.

We should clearly be listening to the opinion of some young comedy-bearded 'influencer' on YT screeching on cluelessly about whatever they've borrowed or financed, rather than one of the best motoring journalists of the past few decades (and somewhat successful racing driver) talking about a renowned drivers' car from a few years ago.

Marvellous.

If you missed the boat on an e30 m3! and don't want the depreciation of an f80 m4/3 an e46 m3 is the dream ticket.
Not without problems though, but no turbos to go pop, a real key to turn and a handbrake to pull.

I'm not sure where your rant comes from and who suggested listening to some YouTuber kid.

I suppose if you are 60+ you will have some sort of rapport with this chap and value his opinion somewhat. thumbup

It wasn't a rant and I'm nowhere near 60, but never mind.
