640d GC Engine noise and MPG
Discussion
I’ve been doing lots of miles over the past few weeks and this week I decided to see what I could get from a full tank of fuel.
So Eco Pro mode most of the time and I managed 680 miles and a genuine 47mpg which I’m rather impressed with. This was mainly motorway miles but also trips into Birmingham and Manchester City centres in rush hour traffic.
Anyway I have noticed that engine sounds different in Eco Pro mode at low speed so does anyone know what it does other than change throttle response and gear changes?

I suspect it has artificial engine noise in other modes they are either off or toned down in Eco Pro. Anyway I have noticed that engine sounds different in Eco Pro mode at low speed so does anyone know what it does other than change throttle response and gear changes?

680 miles is impressive, I've never managed more than about 560 out of my 640d coupe (assume they have the same size tank).
I had 25 miles left too!The last trip was from my house in Stone, Staffordshire to Manchester Royal Infirmary via Rudyard so all cross country and then back home down the M6.
On the motorways I was sitting at 70 or just under but still had the odd burst to get past stuff.
I generally didn't use cruise control as that prevents the car from coasting.
I reckon 750 could be achieved with the right conditions. When I filled up it showed 792 range😀
i came to the conclusion that the low tone noise of mine running in Eco Pro mode was actually the engine running in 6/7/8th gear at low speeds.
Best tank i ever averaged was 52mpg overall with a mixture of driving, highest figure seen on roadworks restricted section of M4 into london - 58mpg.
Lots of torque, high gearing, low drag = good mpg.
By the way, cruise control uses more fuel than if you use your right foot. So if into hypermiling - do it yourself is best so to speak.

I remember getting 47-48 mpg out of my old 640d coupe, only I needed to drive it in eco pro and it bored me. I did exactly the same as you, wanted to see what it was capable of.
Changed the car for a 635d and even being driven fairly quickly I’m getting 39mpg and just over 600 miles to a tank which I find staggering!
Both 640d and 635d are great cars
