I've had my (14 plate) F21 - 120d M Sport since mid 2015, picked it up with 4k on the clock and it's now sitting on just shy of 44k and I've been thinking about replacing it of late. I'd love to get a proper M car but just can't afford it at the moment, have a budget of around £30k assuming I can get roughly £10k for the 120d.

My annual mileage is only about 5 or 6k just now, mainly short journeys but the occasional 3 or 4 hour drive to the north of Scotland/down south, so not sure whether to stick with diesel or move back to petrol. I'd like something with 300+ bhp, less than 20k miles, preferably 18/19 plate & will probably be looking for a 5 door as we're early 30s, recently married and have a 4 bed house to fill... I've been eyeing up a few 335d touring cars and just wondering if you were in my shoes with the same requirements, what would you go for?

I'd go for a F31 340i and get the mppk fitted. I don't think you need a diesel with that annual mileage.

The F31 is a great car and there are some really good engines to choose from.

I had a 330d and loved the performance and economy. It also had the adaptive dampers which are well worth seeking out.

I do 20k + miles each year so always run diesels and my current car is a 640d GC so the same engine as the 335d. The 35d/40d engine just seems to keep pulling over the 330d engine.

As mentioned above if I was you I would be looking at the 340i, l've yet to hear a bad report of one.

One thing that makes a big difference to the 3/4 series is the interior specification so aim to get the best you can. The individual leather is nice especially if the dash has been done as well. It's the extras that make the cars that much nicer to be in and will make selling on at a later date a lot easier.

I've just had a look at the prices and they seem to have increased quite a bit from what they were a year ago.

Not sure I’d want a diesel for your limited mileage.

He 335d engine is mighty impressive though but the thing I hated the most when I test drive one was the suspension. The F3x cars with X drive get lumped with SE suspension which I’m really not a fan of. It’s very very soft and makes the car feel very wallowy. It can apparently be improved with some ACS springs but I’ve not driven one to comment.

I’d be looking at a six pot petrol personally. A 340 touring would be ace. What are prices like at the moment though? Used prices for most things seem mental which is one of the reasons why I’ve just got rid of my M140i.

Prices are pretty mental just now yeah. I've asked the dealer for a quote for what they'd give me for my car & going to go have a look/test drive whenever we're allowed up here. 340i looks promising but it's finding one with the right spec - no horrible interior, HK, HUD, possibly digital cockpit.

Are there many differences in a 67 plate 340i vs 18/68?

I have a 335d and for £589 you can easily fix the SE suspension and now it drives how it should have left the factory. ACS Springs and a Celtic Remap make it a fantastic car

Dealer has offered 8k for current car which brings the budget down a wee bit. Not sure whether to wait it out a bit and hope prices settle back down.

I love the noise and power of mine, on the other hand the Mrs just drove from Wisbech to Exeter on 1/2 tank in peace and we were fully loaded camping last week.

Excellent all rounder

Congratulations. thumbup

A 340i seems to make more sense than a diesel for your mileage.

Hopefully it won't be too long until you collect it!

Picked her up yesterday. Wow. 5 hour drive home was comfortable and exciting when it needed to be, that loud pedal is something else…

Looks good, I’m sure you are delighted with it. Stratstone Chesterfield by any chance? They’ve have some keenly priced cars, that’s when I got my i8 from.

Yep the very same. Agree they have some nicely priced cars - this one has a lot of spec for the price I got it for compared to other garages.

Looks good in grey.

The B58 engine is hugely impressive. Enjoy.

Minor annoyance in that I've picked up one without folding rear seats rotate Why wouldn't they make this standard vs a £350 option? Crazy. Guess it'll keep the interior cleaner with fewer runs to the skip...

I think once my bank account has recovered from the shock of it's first car purchase in 6 years I'll look into buying whatever equipment is necessary to mess about with coding, would like the mirrors to close on locking & adding a few extras like Apple CarPlay etc.

That was bloody annoying. My E90 had no folding seats which made it pretty useless at lugging stuff about. When I was looking at 335d’s most seemed to have the folding seats.

Carly has been good for me for coding and checking error codes. I had to get someone with more knowledge than me to sort CarPlay in my 140 (was £150 inc the aerial I needed).

Yes, it does seem daft but they are still doing it. banghead

I was lucky enough to find an E90 with the split-fold rear seat option - that was standard on my 1991 Sierra Sapphire!
