Hello you knowledgeable lot.
Just bought myself a '65 plate F10 M5, with the Competition Pack.
The sale was conducted over the internet and the first time I saw it in the flesh was yesterday, when it was delivered.
Fabulous condition and low mileage with a FBMWSH.
It sounded loud coming off the transporter and I found out why later.
It has Cat back Eisenmann exhaust. I have yet to look underneath, but I think it is the Non resonator system.
I live on a very quiet estate, so here are my questions:

This car was sold to me as an unmodified car, if the garage are reluctant to put it right, can I reject the car?
If not, I have heard of a cold start delete, can this be done on my car and who could do this? To help with the noise in the morning.
I also think it has had an iffy Remap, because on the overrun from above 3000rpm, it pops and bangs so badly
you would think a Spitfire has just landed. Ridiculously loud.
I love the car, it looks gorgeous and don't want to reject it. Do you think the garage should fix it?
Sorry my first post was a biggie.
Cheers Pat

Ask them first . Say you arent happy with the aftermarket exhaust , not sure they will do anything about a possible remap though

If it wasn't advertised as a modified remap car then you should ask them to return it to stock OEM or reject it completely

As above. Beyond the fact you're not happy, if it is thay loud then I struggle to believe thay they werent aware it was modified - so you've been mugged off and the remap may reduce the longevity and resale value of the car.

Also, if they've used a 3rd party warranty provider then it might be invalidated by the modifications.

And it'll add cost to your insurance.

So yes, you really should seek some sort of redress or rejection. Perhaps avoid putting miles on the car until you've reached a satisfactory outcome?

Good luck!

Hi everyone, I had the car checked today by a BMW Master Technician.
Not only has the car got a full Eisenmann exhaust system, but the cats have been removed too
and the bellows have been removed and the exhaust butterflies have been wired open.
He also confirmed it has been remapped, badly.
He also said without the cats it would fail an MOT, so it brings into doubt the validity of the
years MOT, I have on the car.

Please can I have your input, as to what to do, bearing in mind, it is the best condition M5
he has seen in a long time.
Should I try some old fashioned "horse trading" or reject it out of hand?

Reject it, find another one, plenty out there!
Remap would worry me if its a crap one, who knows done did it and what effect its had on the car.

Hi - I have a 2016 with a competition pack. Even with the BMW M Exhaust system the car is loud on startup. I understand you can map/code out the noise but this would be an after market solution. If you were to put this car back to standard, it might still be louder than you wanted.

reject

unless you want a "pop goes the weasel" moment with that engine

You have 2 options

1 - Reject the car

2- Keep the car based on its otherwise cleanliness, the problem is you will need to get it remapped and road legal, the costs of getting the cats replaced will be huge, the cost of another remap also expensive, perhaps you can get quotes for these and ask garage to reimburse this amount to you in order to keep the car.

This. If you keep it, you're going to have an issue with it and some point, and I'd suspect the warranty is already void.

There are plenty of stories of modded (and standard) M5 engines going pop. Reversing the dodgy mods will be easier than reversing any damage they've already possibly caused.

Plus he's been lied to about them. That in itself would be enough for me to reject it. It's way beyond the usual caveat emptor. The dealer has bullshizzled and pocketed a profit from the OP's hard earned cash, possibly via a dodgy MOT.

Perhaps I'm a bit too uptight about these things but personally I couldn't enjoy the car given the circumstances.

Given the nature of the sale, I also wonder how robust the warranty arrangements are for the car. When I last looked at M5's the majority (even at reputed performance car garages) were using RAC, Warranty Wise, Warranty Direct etc who won't touch it with a bargepole without a fight.

Reject it, go get one from a more reputable source with a proper BMW warranty on it.

Reject it.

If its had a remap with those god awful pops and bangs to me it says a lot about the previous owner and their mechanical sympathy.

Thank you everyone. I appreciate your input.

I have emailed the dealer with my concerns and await his reply.

It is such a shame a previous owner was such a "Gary Boy".

The dealer has asked for me to give a review on his own site and Autotrader.

That could be fun!!!!!

They either lied to you or don't know enough about the car to know its modified. Alarm bells on both I'm afraid, I would 100% reject. Whilst I appreciate 'gutted cats' can't be seen without getting the car on a ramp, a non-standard exhaust would be easier to spot or hear, unless you don't want to of course. irked

That exhaust is worth a pretty penny though. Swapping back to standard and selling on the Eisenmman would make sense financially to the dealer.

OK long post so hold in there!

Ordered a 2014 M5 Competition pack through a company here called Carvana, they have a seven day no argument return policy. Car was the exact spec I wanted, competition package, exec package, B&O stereo, driver assistance, lighting package etc. Looked great in the pictures. Car turns up and it's mint, not a mark outside and the interior is great, thing is when I started it up it was loud, having had an E63 and hearing that a complaint that these cars were quiet I was surprised, but, rather than take a chance I had BMW perform a PPI on it.

Glad I did, the car had a different exhaust, cats were taken out, the DMEs had been reprogrammed to the point that they couldn't hook a computer into it to even check what error codes it was throwing out. At this point I told Carvana to take the car back as I wasn't interested. Carvana then instructed BMW to put it back to being street legal and fix a couple of other issues I'd seen, front dash speaker wasn't working and the back blind was sticking. It also had upgraded suspension but the tech said it was actually better than the standard one so leave it on. All in it had a new front speaker, new rear blind, four new tyres, two new DMEs, new exhaust and they did a full inspection of the engine. The parts alone were over 20k BUT the tech said I was basically getting back a good to go car so to said if you like it, it was my choice but he saw no reason to doubt the car. The engine checked out fine, as did the transmission.

So it didn't cost me a penny and I have a one owner, full service history car that's had any issues wrong with it put right. As with any of these cars there's always that thing in the back of your mind that something could go wrong, that's what you get for buying an older car. That said it looks great, drives brilliantly and I love it, probably more than the AMG.

Not sure if that helps but I will say, if you have to fit the bill it will cost you a lot, like I said the parts alone were 20k and that was before a couple of days of labour as well but I didn't pay a penny for it.
