I’ve just finished cataloguing one by one all the RHD CSL production data (yes I know, hello ladies). It is a fairly arduous process but I don’t know of anyone else that has done it. I will start on the LHD production data next, but as there are more cars it will take me a few months. So in the interim here is a summary of the key findings.

There were 542 RHD CSLs made according to the BMW ASAP data, there is no listing for cars JC98136 > JC98139, so I am guessing that these cars don’t exist. Of the 542 cars there are 16 test vehicles which have their “Data restricted” with 6 made during the production run in July, the rest in 2002. These test cars are listed for the following markets:

Australia – 1
Japan – 1 (no RHD cars went to Japan though)
UK – 11
South Africa – 1
Oceania – 2 (New Zealand maybe and ?)

The first test car is shown as built on 19/9/2002 with the first production car coming off the line on 10/6/2003. The last RHD car made was a silver car on 17/12/2003 and was shipped out of Europe with a KM/H speedo and 315 MhZ alarm but it didn’t go to Australia. The second last RHD car made was 7 days prior and was a UK/Ireland delivered car.

Of the 542 RHD cars made:
139 were black, of these 26 were delimited and 49 were delivered on double spokes.
403 were silver, of these 65 were delimited and 137 were delivered on double spokes.

There were 3 stripped out road racers i.e no options selected at all, all 3 were silver UK cars. These cars were all supplied on double spoke wheels and didn’t have any of the “selectable options” of:
  • Deleted model lettering.
  • Green tinted upper strip windscreen.
  • Climate comfort windscreen.
  • Floor mats.
  • Smoker package.
  • Headlight washers.
  • PDC.
  • Rain sensor.
  • Xenon.
  • Air conditioning.
  • CD Player.
  • Mini disc player.
  • Radio.
There were 3 cars fitted with 2 stage brake lights in the last couple of weeks of production, 1 black and 2 silver. The black car went to Australia and the two silver cars had KPH speedos and all had 315 MhZ alarms, so maybe the other two went to NZ?
The last RHD black car made was a delimited car that went to Australia.

UK cars
430 UK/Ireland cars were made including the 11 “data restricted cars” some of which were made in 2002. Of these:
111 of these were black, 19 of these were delimited and 49 were on double spokes.
319 of these were silver, 38 were delimited and 131 were on double spokes.
1 UK delivered car had a KPH speedo, as did one “Data restricted car”.

49 cars were delivered without a radio.
25 cars were delivered without air conditioning.
10 had mini disc players.
13 were CSL debadged.
208 had a green strip windscreen.
87 had a climate comfort windscreen.
269 had floor mats.
76 had the smokers pack.
281 had the headlight washers. The production cars didn’t get them until car JC98097 on 28/7/2003.
247 had PDC.
203 had the rain sensor.
329 had Xenons.
405 had air conditioning.
328 had a CD player.
381 had a radio.

3 UK production cars didn’t have a battery master switch, seat belt buzzer or additional fuel in tank when built.

2 production cars had the “Omission of outer skin preservation”, a silver car and a black car.

1 production car didn’t get the “Coil on plug” option. This appears to have been relevant to UK cars as all other RHD markets didn’t have it, I guess it is related to fuel quality and emissions.

South African cars
60 RHD cars, including 1 “data restricted” test car.

21 black cars, 3 were delimited and none supplied on double spokes.
39 silver cars, 12 delimited and none supplied on double spokes.

2 CSL debadged.
32 with a green upper strip windscreen.
28 with a climate comfort screen.
All supplied with floor mats, smoker package, headlight washers, Xenon lights, CD, radio, seat belt buzzer.
42 with PDC.
34 with rain sensor.
54 with air conditioning.
4 cars had option S988A which I don’t know what it is.

Australian cars
28 cars including 1 “data restricted car” which BMW Australia didn’t sell and isn’t on their records as importing, so 27 imported and sold.

26 silver cars, 10 delimited, 12 supplied with double spokes.
2 black cars, 1 delimited, none supplied on double spokes.

All cars fully optioned as listed above and had climate comfort screens fitted.

The New Zealand delivered cars aren't specifically listed, so without I get an example of a NZ VIN I can’t identify them for sure, but there are some other “KPH, 315 MhZ cars” listed which I guess are those.

If anyone has any specific combination queries please ask. Now for the LHD data….sigh….

We have at least 13 CSL's in NZ, plus a couple of UK imports.
I can help you out with an NZ VIN if you like?

Here is the updated and final (?) version of my first post on the RHD production run of the CSL. I am currently analysing all of the LHD production data to make a similar post.

There were 3 cars fitted with 2 stage brake lights in the last couple of weeks of production, 1 black and 2 silver. The black car went to Australia and the two silver cars had KPH speedos and all had 315 MhZ alarms and went to an unknown market.
The last RHD black car made was a delimited car that went to Australia.

The production spilt by month is as shown below. However it must be noted that some cars didn't come off the line in VIN sequence, it appears as though these had "rework faults" to rectify or were waiting parts.

That leaves 12 unknown market RHD vehicles. Of these 12, 5 where "Oceania cars" including 1 preproduction vehicle. The Oceania cars were:

3 had the MY04 coil on plug options which I guess all went to the same market.
3 had an alarm system.
3 had a green tint windscreen.
1 had floor mats.
1 had the smokers package.
3 had headlight cleaning system.
4 had PDC.
3 had rain sensor.
4 had xenons.
4 had air conditioning.
4 had a CD player.
4 had a radio.
4 were shipped with a battery master switch.
4 had English literature packs.

That leaves 7 unknown region vehicles. These comprised of:
All 7 were silver, none were delimited.
All had an alarm.
All had floor mats.
All had smokers package.
All had xenon.
All were shipped with a battery master switch.
All had English literature packs.
6 had headlight cleaning system.
6 had PDC.
6 had rain sensor.
6 had air conditioning.
6 had a CD player.
6 had a radio.
2 had a 2 stage brake light.

And that is pretty much it for the RHD production run of the CSL. I hope that has answered some questions.

If anyone has any specific combination queries please ask.

The LHD production run & market is much more complicated to break down than the RHD, but none the less this is what I have established:

There were 841 LHD CSLs made according to the BMW ASAP data, there is no listing for cars JB98408 > JB98409, these cars don’t exist as they appear to be the change point from MY03 cars to MY04 cars, there is a production gap in the data for this period too for the RHD vehicles at the end of August 2003. Of the 841 cars there are 44 vehicles which have their “Data restricted” with 15 made during the production run. These LHD test cars are listed for the following markets:

1 Egyptian market car.
35 German market vehicles.
3 Japanese market vehicles.
5 unknown market vehicles, however of these 5:
3 had Italian operating instructions,
1 had Swedish operating instructions (books),
1 had Dutch operating instructions (books),

The total LHD production run consisted of:
303 Black cars (36%) – 135 delimited – 97 were delivered on double spokes.
538 Silver cars (64%) – 223 delimited – 205 were delivered on double spokes.
Thus of the production run 43% were delimited and 36% were delivered on double spoke wheels.

German market L801A cars – 355 cars (42%)
Japanese market L807A cars – 152 cars (18%)
Gulf market L822A cars – 3 cars (3%)
Egyptian market L821A cars – 1 car (development vehicle)
The remaining cars didn’t have a market option code, so the following numbers are based upon the language in the “literature packs”

German literature, but not a German home market car – 159 cars (19%)
English literature – 19 cars (2%)
French literature – 62 cars (7%)
Italian literature – 71 cars (8%)
Spanish literature – 19 cars (2%)

The first LHD test car is shown as built on 17/9/2002 with the first production car coming off the line on 04/6/2003. There were 10 German market Press vehicles produced in the lead up to the main production run between 05/05/2003 > 08/05/2003 and 1 pre-production car coming off on the 03/06/2003, the day before the main production run started. The last LHD car made (JB98842) was a silver car on 19/12/2003 and was listed as a German market development vehicle which I presume was to be kept in some form of museum. Thus the last saleable production car was (JC98841) and was also made on 19/12/2003. It was a silver car that went to Japan.

There was 1 LHD stripped out road racer i.e. no options selected at all, a silver car with French language and literature pack car. This car didn’t have any of the “selectable options” of:
Radio
Mini disk player
CD player
Air Conditioning
Xenon lights
Rain sensor
PDC
Headlight Cleaning
Toll mirror (Japanese option only)
Smokers pack
Velour mats
Climate comfort windscreen
Green tint band windscreen
Alarm system
Deleted model lettering
Delimited

However, there was a silver car (Italian) that was also stripped of all options as listed above, except it was delimited whereas the French car wasn’t.

There were 8 cars fitted with 2 stage brake lights in the last couple of weeks of production, 1 black and 7 silver. All of these vehicles went to Japan.
The last LHD black car made (17/12/2003) was a delimited car that had German language and literature pack without a front number plate support. The car doesn’t have a country code so I can’t be sure where it went.

The production spilt by month is as shown below. However it must be noted that there were many LHD cars didn't come off the line in VIN sequence, it appears as though these had "rework faults" to rectify or were waiting parts. It was very rare for a RHD vehicle’s production date to be out of sequence to the build date of the cars’ produced around it, but it was not too uncommon with the LHD build, however it did improve as the production went on. Thus the VIN numbers listed below are a guide based upon the build date sequencing with the VIN.

And after many hours (days) that rounds out the LHD CSL production data and the final chapter in my cataloguing of the entire CSL production run. I have found it interesting in looking at the results, it is a pity BMW don’t make this sort of information freely available. In any case, let me know if I have been bereft of detail anywhere wink

A batch of CSLs that came to the UK in August 2003 with the option of fitted xenons lights never had the light washers fitted to the car. There was a mistake at the factory and they forgot to fit them. these were retro fitted at Thorne before coming to the dealership and delayed the cars by a few weeks. This included my CSL that was delivered to the UK in early August 2003 and was registered on 1st September 03

I had heard about this. It appears as though the washers weren't "forgotten" as they weren't part of the options selected for the build in this batch of cars. I'd say somebody at BMW UK made the error when specing/ordering the cars. It also wasn't limited to cars with Xenons, it was all of the first 67 cars built up until JC98097 on 28/07/2003. It is also worthwhile noting that it still remained a selectable option for the entire production run, not every car had them.
