I agree - a £10k 'bang' on a £15k car is a hard pill to swallow!

a 15k car?

Thorney motorsport can sort engines for much less than 10k anyway.

Was referring to the fact that plenty of the 'warranty eligible' cars (eg. E39 M5, E46 M3) are available for £15k.

Think you'd struggle getting a "warranty eligible" example of either of those for £15K tbh, M5 at a push, but wouldn't be mint!

Trust me, they do. Sometimes.

Do you feel lucky?

Sorry to go on but can you qualify that? I'm interested to see if a CSL engine has let go.

I've never heard of a CSL with an engine problem.

Neither have I. There's bound to be someone though that didn't bother to keep the oil levels topped up.

So it looks like engine is not likely to cause any serious problems if looked after, which takes me back to my previous question...

Do I need an extended warranty or do I bank the cash and pay for things when they go wrong?

It is a gamble, once out of warrenty it can not be reinstated, BMW have said they will review the prices in about 4-5 months from memory. If they bring it back to the old price you'd be gutted not to have a warrenty, if they don't then you won't care. I believe the clutch issue will be dealt with regardless of warrenty.

Just buy an 53 plate onwards which has a warrenty until after the descision and make a dchoice after that?

Yeah I think you are right Nathan - most of the cars I am looking at have almost a year to run on warranty so I shall probably get one and review it when the time comes.
