I have a 1.8 Mk2.5 and I love everything about, just wish for a bit for oomph! I know it does not need the extra speed, but it would be nice if their was an option to do so. Feels a lot slower now I have a bike too, so that doesnt help.
There's a multitude of options on a MK2.5, It's basically a spruced up MK1 so supercharging or turboing is easilly done with a few spare k.
I know have seen it being done for £3995 self fit or £4995 fully fitted. I am seriously tempted to do this when I have a spare couple of grand.

It can be done far cheaper than than. With a Mini supercharger you can DIY it for around £1,000 or get someone else to do it for a bit more. Or if you can find one a secondhand Jackson Racing Supercharger kit can be had for around £1,000.

Is it much effort to upgrade the Mazda engine to the duratec spec?

In the MK3, It's a Duratec engine, designed and built in conjunction with Ford, mazda just use inlet VVT.

So yes, remove the VVT on the Inlet, stick better cams in, tubular manifold, sports Cat and back box, a remap and you will have 200hp ish.

The above is do-able for £3k.

Add in an engine refresh/rebuild (advisable on the early cars) you need to add £2.5k.

I feel like I should make a kit.....

Next level would be a set of throttle bodies, which would be another £3k ish. and would sound awesome and could get to 240bhp.

Or you can swap it for a 2.3 crate engine.

BBR, Blink and I'm sure one or two others can get you 200bhp for under the 3k you quoted doing similar to what you said on the NC. BBR also do throttle bodies if you want as well.

yep they will indeed, as roddison will do as well.

My price includes fitting all gaskets, oil etc.

Similar is possible for the ND as well. Does seem like Mazda were chasing a particular emissions target with the NC and ND engines as the additional BHP would be reasonably trivial for Mazda to release from these two engines at the time of manufacture. I would hope with the changes to VED now making it pointless to chase marginal improvement in emissions we might see an end to the deliberate sacrificing of performance for emissions?

Is this part of the next generation of engine for the MX5 or even a rebirth of the RX7?

You certainly do NOT want more power from your n/d
My car has 2156 miles and is on its 5th gearbox. Today a customers car with 1800 miles needs a gearbox

Was just thinking of you roddo when I saw this thread...

Pointless thread anyway, roddo, Blink, BBR and Caterham don't have to meet Euro 6 emissions levels as they are either aftermarket or SVA, no type approved.

First thing they all do is remove the close coupled catalyst, you'll pass an MOT but not a type approval test. It's easy to make loads of power if you don't care about proper emissions (or the longevity of your gearboxes!)
