Not sure how others have got on with comparison websites, but very few would quote for me being an import and modified
Ended up making loads of phone calls to different specialist insurers
Will link to a thread when I find it, of who it was suggested I call...

Having said that you may be better off with the comparison sites; think it was the import factor more than the mods as none of them could actually find my car on the reg plate

I'm finding the comparison websites are so expensive! I wondered if there were privately owned or a company that yourselves are familiar with having a good rep with mx5's.

Best of luck in getting cover at 19 with 1 NCB. I'm very active on MX5Nutz and most young people I know in the scene are paying £2,500 + at your age. Not worth it on a car worth £1k.

As far as stancing goes it's each to their own. I've driven a couple of stanced ones and it does totally ruin the handling. But I agree it does look quite good if done right.

JQ - nearly all of those companies have said I have to be over 25 to be insured with them.

I got a quote for £11,000 for a mx5, then changed the car to an audi a3 and then it went to £1,300!

what is this world coming to!

Just gonna C&P this from another thread, seems to be a popular topic at the moment.

St. Anger said:
You won't get anything less than £1000/month until you've got at least 1 full year of claim free driving under your belt.

The original quote on my mx-5 was £2769/year fully comp from Admiral with £500 excess. I lowered the milage from 10K/year to 4K/year and it brought it down to about £2500, adding my mum and papa as named drivers reduced it to £2146. Finally, setting it up as a multicar policy with my mum's Golf brought it down to £2003.

I was lucky enough to be able to borrow the cash from my grandparents to pay it in one go - I realise your circumstances may be different to mine, but they said they would rather I was paying them £200/month than owing it to a company!

My insurance is due for renewal at the beginning of October and this year (20y/o with one years no claims and 2 years having my licence) it's only about £800.

Hope some of that helps.

Buy an MX-5, I'm not quite good enough to keep up on the runs and I don't try to kid myself that I am - but as long as you're sensible, having a very forgiving little car like the MX-5 is the perfect way to gain valuable experience and skill in driving something without driver aids!

Then you can get one like Jonnys

Have a look through my flickr to see some more of the runs.

Thanks St. I have put both parents on it, I rarely drive as I will be commuting on public transport so my mileage is still so low!
I will be 19 in January with a full years no claims and that's what I've been getting quotes for.

No-one will insure me in a kit car either, starting to look at your big standard boring European hatchbacks now because my dream is slipping away due to unreal premiums!

Mine worked out around £1100 when I was 19 with a couple of mods via Admiral. I did have the TT and 3 series insured with them as well though... try a Multicar policy if you can get your parents to insure with the same company. Also as mentioned look at getting others put on as named drivers. I'd play with the differences between leaving it in a garage (If you have one) on your drive or your road. Mines cheaper on the road despite having a garage.
