Any help appreciated with this;
My mk2 1800 has a starting problem where it sometimes starts up on three cylinders. This is very unpredictable and it is not misfiring or missing, it is only running on three. Sometimes it will go on to four while running, sometimes it will take several restarts for it to fire on four. I have fitted new plug leads and plugs, it is not damp and will do it in any weather. When running correctly the car runs great, very strong and willing little motor.
There is a smell coming from the engine bay when it is running on three, I think that this is unburnt fuel in the cat. There are no warning lights on when it does this.
This is a real shame as it is a great little car when running well, I have been all over the country in it this summer but it is a real pain when it does this so unpredictably.

Nobody????
Think this could be the coil pack failing? When I look at replacement coil packs there is mention of 3 pin and four pin types, how do I tell the difference?

Certainly could be a coilpack since you've eliminated plugs and leads

Which one of these does your current coilpack look like;

Know anybody who could let you borrow theirs for a bit to try it? They're not cheap.

Think its the first one on your link.
No they are not cheap, certainly more expensive than expected, hence the request to pick someones brains about the issue. Further research seems to point to the coil packs being a known issue on the MK2.
I have seen a cheaper alternative but not sure if this would be false economy, pattern parts as opposed to OEM.

It sounds like it could be the coil pack, and given the age of your car then it's probably long overdue a coil pack change (good luck with doing that wink)! Me and the OH have a mk2 each and both of them have had a coil pack change.

I had a Mk1 that had the same symptoms and it was the coil pack. Good second hand ones are plentiful and much cheaper than new ones (you can get a tested one from Autolink).
