How long did it take you?.
2.5 days from jack up to back down but that wasnt flat out, a few cups of tea were had!

I also lost an hour due to the clips used on the nsf arch liner - no phillips heads and a nightmare to remove. Broke a few in thw process, got some replacements off a Mazda 323F in the scrappies yesterday.

I'm keen to do this to my recently acquired '5. Is it necessary to have a different applicator (the long bit that goes into the sills) for each substance, i.e. one for the converter, and one for the cavity wax?

Many thanks.

I've found www.rust.co.uk to be good for dinitrol products, a bit cheaper than the other place mentioned here. Hoping for some warm weather to get stuck into my newly acquired MkII 1.8 RS.

I'm pretty pleased with it.

Theres a couple of areas showing a bit of wear where the underside has crunched off speedbumps, but overall pretty good.

The inside arch lips, and sills etc still seem fine - was definitely worth the effort.

If I've still got the car I'll probably touch it all up again this Autumn.

Bear in mind this is a car that gets used daily, anytime, anyplace, in the wet, down country lanes, on the motorway etc.

If it was a Sunday car I reckon it would still look like the day I did it.

yer I was planning on doing what you have, but i was speaking to carl at cbs autos and he was dead against undersealing, as it " rusts from the inside and it can mask the problem".. he just said use clear waxoyl, But seeing as yours is still good I'll probably just go the dinitrol route..

Cheers

Yes, old-fashioned underseal not good. Dinitrol good.

Just done mine with 3 750ml cans of Bilt Hamber Dynax S50. A nasty job but it does need doing if your '5 is to stand a chance of escaping the rust.

I can't speak for other products but the S50 seems to form a decent coating and each can comes with an aerosol nozzle and a 2ft extension tube with a diffuser on the end. It's fairly runny and with hindsight, a plastic sheet under the car would have avoided the need to clean the drive afterwards.

Well worth taking the plastic wheel arch liners out too - I couldn't believe the amount of compacted mud I hosed out of mine!

heres my tip
worried that your mx5 factory sill drain holes are too small and easily blocked ?

get the black and decker out and drill a couple of your own then

no trapped water or damp in my sills !

you can easily put a splodge of aluminiumised filler and a dab of paint over the holes to cover them if originality became an issue

Where have all the photos gone showing how to do this?

A friend of my brothers treats Land Rovers for a living and said he would do my MX5 for me smile

Steve I am after something similar with my car...for the moment I could happily leave it somewhere reputable in the week (dont need a car for work at the moment and can walk/get the bus).

I would want the undersides inc subframes doing, and chassis rails.

Maybe we should club together and see if somewhere will do a discounted rate to do both cars?

I have looked at these guys as I go to Cheltenham quite often to visit friends...

I am going to speak to my uncle in Staffordshire who is in the motor trade as well, and may be able to recommend somewhere for this as well smile

Sorry folks - I had reorganised my photos on Photbucket and never thought about the impact on this thread biggrin

Should be fixed now!

N.B. I sold my 5 the year after and amd a further 3 cars on but still miss it when the sun's out!

No idea if it is still not rusty.

This is very interesting and could not have come at a better time ,
My 2002 Mk 2.5 today had its latest MOT ( it passedwoohoo ) , because I have a good relationship with the Mazda garage and the Tech doing the test I was able to be very close up under and all around the car whilst it was up on the 4 post lift and was able to closely inspect the whole underside.
I am pleased to say in general the car even at 13 years is still in fair condition , the only area of issue is surface rust at the rear of the sills near the seams , a good poke with a pointed probe showed no sign of serious penetrating rust .

My dilemma is either to book into the same Mazda workshop and have them rub back treat and respray the sills with chip guard , the tech says they have done a few cars in worse condition than mine and have had good results from a cosmetic point of view .Just waiting on a quotation
Or do I attempt it my self with rattle cans .I need the end result to look factory finish , not because I want to sell the car , as it would add no value , I have owned the car for 13 years and just want to keep it looking good

I will most certainly also be addressing the inner lower sills ,

The problem is the list of work to be done is growing . At 46k miles it needs
1/ new hood
2/sills
3/ new back box on exhaust due to loose rattling baffle
4/new front fog lights , silvering shot on existing
5/ tyres are now about 6 years old and will need changing just due to age
and so on , the cost of all of this is likely more than the car is worth

Sorry to bump this again, but I'm in the middle of this sort of work with my Eunos and I'm not onto getting protection into the sill sections.

Janitor - if you're still around, would your photos that were in the AutoUnity post you did still be available? They're all broken when I went to have a read through your post.

Cheers,
Steve
