I know this car and it would be a perfect first American car, only ever going up in value and very, very keenly priced.

Believe it or not, you dont have to spend a fortune to have a reasonably fast american car and you dont have to limit your options to GM's either.
I sold a Plymouth Duster about 3 yrs ago for £5000 and it ran 12.5 straight off the boat and with a bit of tuning it would have gone 12.2, not as tidy as that Chevelle but nowhere near as heavy either.
As for muscle cars running 15's and 16's, a lot of the old road tests were done on old bias belted tyres with no grip, it doesn't take a lot of time or money to drop those times into the 13's even with a stock motor.

Hi Moparmick, very interesting stuff... where would one go to find such a car (the Duster I mean)? Are there any other gems out there of a similar ilk that dont cost £squillions?

There are in the states if you look carefully, dont expect a charger at a knock down rate, as they are more of a fashion accessory to a lot of buyers, not all i might add, some are dyed in the wool moparites.
Here's a pic of the car after i sold it, bear in mind, the guy had tarted it up a bit.

It's a '72 Chevelle SS, air con(working), power brakes it has it's original radio with 8 track, I also have the original wheels and steering wheel. It is a very original car which is rare for a Chevelle as most of them were modded at some time in their life. It is a matching number car and is a genuine SS it has two build sheets and it's protect-o-plate still attached to the warranty. It has all the options as you can see from it's build sheet including the SS package.
She is a very reliable old girl but with other cars in the garage I don't use it so was thinking about selling it.

You can see it was shipped to the dealer O Dell Chevrolet in Carrollton Missouri it still has the dealer badge on the boot door.

I recognize that this is a crazy old thread so I apologize but hoping to revive it. Does anyone know where this Car is?? I am the great grandson of Nelson O'dell the dealer that sold this car initially. I am very interested in trying to find it.

Please let me know

Early notchback Mustangs are a brilliant first yank, maybe a bit too common but parts are cheap and easy to get.

Also worth a look if you are into a bit of strip use, Hayling garage get some awesome stock...

Mine runs in the 13's at the moment but it's only got a tiny 289 engine...

It doesn't look like Tiger289 owns the car anymore but might be worth messaging them directly on here (click profile, 'email me'). I think you might need to be signed up for a certain amount of days or posts before the ability to email someone kicks in though.
