I'm comtemplating a cheapish 4x4 the winter, and have decided I'd maybe like a Grand Cherokee/Cherokee to boounce about the cross country route I take to work in the winter months (approx 25mile each way, with say 10miles/10mile dual carriageway/5 mile town)....... Not looking to spend a massive amount, with the intention of selling on in spring (probably won't if I fall in love with it)... it's got to be one of the square ones....don't like the rounded ones.

what are the problem areas I should be looking for...

1) real axle noises (how loud should they be before you start to worry ??)
2) engine issues ??? what are they - probably 4l (might try for one with LPG, is that a no no ?)
3) rust ... where are they suscepatble, which you wouldn't see at a cursory glance ?

Cheers for the input smile

Pretty sure this has been discussed in this forum and the off road one a few times now, does the search bring anything up?

I own one which I'm about to sell its a 2.7 td merc engine

I like driving it as you won't get stuck can fault it untill spat out an injector just spent £1200 on new injectors so I would say watch for injector problems on diesels

Got no noise from diff there pretty solid

Steering box for play

But basically faultless

Mine is a 52 reg

i would get a gas coverted 4.0ltr 2.5 petrol are ok but no real gains in anything and as bad on fuel really, the 4ltr is a cracking powerfull engine and easy to get parts for if you do wanna mod them.
then its up to you what model.
xj cherokee petrol,
diesels can be a bit tepremental and i would never buy one that has over heated.
grands are a great drive but can be an electrical nightmare, with heater systems windows clocks often causing problems.

i just sold a really clean 98 xj petrol for £500 taxed and moted, there cheap cause of the fuel get a gassed one and dont look back, you would love it.

later ones [facelifts] around 98 where a lot better for anti rust treatment.
axle noise is to be avoided
and as said there good on gas.

ended up with a 97 R reg Cherokee Limited in metailic red 4l with 67k on the clock ... decided against LPG... as I just kept thinking why are there some many being sold as spares or repair.
