Restomods are the only way forwards for American muscle methinks?

But in my booky-wook, it devalues them...

Top hose it fitted to 'fresh-air' cooling...

I've been through pretty much everything now, suspension, steering, brakes etc, most of it was crusty and has been replaced. The exhaust is still on the 'to do' list, hopefully will be sorted in the next few weeks.

This is a streetview of the front garden it lived in before crossing the pond (I got the address from the US title). I should send him a letter congratulating him on his craftsmanship. laugh

I think the botchery was done before it left the US in 2019. If I thought it was the fella I'd bought it off (2nd UK owner), I'd drive up and give him a slap! rofl

I agree.
I don't like them at all.

I should do, as I love hot rods, and back in the 50's and early 60's that's exactly what hot rodding was all about, take a junkyard 30's Ford etc., and drop in what ever the newest latest stuff from recently wrecked new tech 50's and 60's cars you could get from wreckers yards......resto-mods before the word was invented.

The thing is, 50's tech in a 30's car is still old tech by todays standards.

My mate in Cali has a US mate with a '57 Chevy, that he's done the full resto-mod thing with, injected LS motor, overdrive auto, Dakota digital gauges, modern seats, all sitting on top of an Art Morrison chassis with IFS etc.,etc.
It drives like a modern car, and he says its very impressive........but its not a '57 Chevy anymore.

That Firebird is cheap now. Surely at that money he'd be better off tidying the interior and roof up and then selling, especially since he already has the door cards and seat covers? A roof is about $500 plus shipping, he'd get his money back?

Unless other nasties are lurking...

When initially buying one of these muscle or pony cars and it was originally spec'd with things like power discs and steering and the interior again is of a higher spec' there is nothing wrong with carefully measuring wheel well dimensions and vehicle track and swapping-in some modern large diameter wheels and selecting tyre od's to match the OEM 14" or 15" rubber. Just the modern rubber alone can transform handling, braking and acceleration.......although ride comfort at lower speed might suffer. 'Lifting' original engine and replacing with a 'built' engine from the same family will minimise the risk of even minor surgery under the hood and allowing the car to return to stock configuration if needed.

I bought a same year 4 door sedan Falcon with 4 speed and knackered 2.8 6 banger. I was so impressed that I sold it immediately to a couple of buddies who ran it for a year or two......

Yep been there too!
Complete pooh,

And I definitely don’t do so called “resto mods”
Just buy a late Mustang!
And if one’s unfortunate to launch it,
One may escape with all one’s limbs ,
Which won’t be the case with a 69’ shelled whatever,
Prawn cracker structural strength,

Of course if one just what’s to admire and polish it
No problem

Complete pooh,
You'd be forgiven for thinking that the Falcon with its 6 cylinder engine was simply the equivalent of our Zephyr/Zodiac.........but it ain't.....

Really like that. I don't think I'd fancy steering it through the sea of wimmin' in their people carriers that infest the roads round my way, but nonetheless, cool looking car. wink

Barges like these have almost zero desirability
amongst the main stream possible yank buyers
It’s the sort of motor that would have been chopped up for parts a few years back,
A 68 Hipo 440 has value blah blah
But apart from mechanical components these are a nightmare to keep nice, virtually no body or trim stuff
Anywhere, and what’s available will be fortunes!

But I suppose it only takes one person to take a fancy to it!
But in reality it’s a 10k tops car.

If I liked it and it checked out I would pay £15K perhaps.

That would be reckless though, imagine trying to re-sell later on, and like you say get parts!

This 300K has also piqued my interest, it looks similar to an earlier one I shared but in much better nick!

It sold for £13k or so late last year.

Amazing how may of these cars just get rotated around various auctions.

In the brief driving video the suspension looks even softer than the Plymouth Belvedere I had! Roly polly stuff, probable with shot shocks too.

In the same 'vein' - can you imagine parts availability (even in the 'states) for this '57 Mercury........don't you just hate that continental touring kit?

This '57 Turnpike Cruiser is in superb condition and quite ususual with its rear window and an interior to die for.........the only thing seemingly letting it down is the 'squashed' bit of side trim........can you imagine trying to source that?

Yes, conti kits are just horrible things imho as well..........my good mate has one on his '55 Chevy Bel-Air hardtop...yuck

And yes, as lovely, and different it is, parts would be a nightmare now. Even in the US, with the fast disappearing of all the old junk yards, its not easy finding parts for the rarer stuff.

Its why prices for Tri-Five Chevy's, Corvette's and Mustangs etc are therefore much higher, as the aftermarket parts supply (like MG and Jags here in UK) mean they are a much easier ownership prospect in terms of looking after.
