Eventually got round to buying a 5 GMT. I initially wanted one after admiring blueg33's on this thread, and then I called into the Seiko boutique to have a look at them. Wanted a black one, got a black one.

I think it's a really good looking watch, and looks great on the wrist. The jubilee bracelet looks great. The display caseback is a nice touch. The watch itself feels great quality, but my only complaint is that off the wrist, the bracelet feels really cheap and tinny quite honestly. Especially the clasp. Bit disappointing for a £400 RRP watch. I may have to buy a Strapcode strap. I'll see how it goes, it does feel fine when being worn. The bracelet on my similarly priced Seiko Speedtimer is way higher quality and much heavier feeling.

Thats a bit of a minor gripe though, as I said, it feels fine on the wrist a looks good. Overall, I am very pleased with it.
The Seiko 5 GMT is not in the same league as the Speedtimer chrono. For one, its nearly £200 less RRP. The GMT has pressed clasp and folded end links, basically the whole bracelet is pressed out. The Speedtimer on the other hand is solid and milled throughout. Even the oyster style of the Seiko 5 is just as bad.

I second the Crafter Blue, I love my Shogun on it.

Or alternatively, get the strapcode bracelet, it will defnintely elevate the 5 GMT a few levels up!

When I worked in Japan about 25 years ago I bought a load of older watches - if I saw one for sale in a second hand shop, I’d buy it - here are 2 of the seikos and a citizen. The middle one is battery operated but the 2 blue faced watches are automatic and still work perfectly - I don’t know much about them - can anyone tell me about them ?
I really like the Seiko on the right, it's definitely my kind of thing - is their a model / serial number on the back..?
Model number 5606-5140. This is from the 1973 catalogue:

Still on the original bracelet by the looks of it. Lovely thing.

Wow 17,000 yen back then was a lot of money - £105 at todays exchange rate so a lot more back then.

Was wondering why my wife bought me flowers for my birthday (not something she normally does!)..... then I noticed the name of the bouquet. She knows me too well! biggrin

Most of my Seiko's are dive watches so I just bought this as a more dressy watch. It's making its way from the land of the rising sun.

I'm waiting for a grey NATO and a black silicone rubber strap for this watch to come in. In the mean time, stuck it on the Gulf NATO.

I had a 7548J in orange for my 21st birthday in 1983.
Quartz.
The mechanism has failed, and Seiko Maidenhead can't replace or repair it.
Its a sentimental piece, will an auto mechanism fit at all ?

JDM, titanium, textured dial, I am smitten. Ordered last Monday evening, arrived on Thursday afternoon. Really hard to get across how beautifully polished and brushed the various bits are, and the crown does a lovely "zzitzzitzzitzz" thing when you wind it.

Wearing this for a few days - very comfortable, and an all-round nice watch IMHO. (and no I haven't set the day/date properly hehe )

A friend of mine did a "build your own watch' course during the first lockdown and then did a load of other online watch-making courses. Randomly saw him post a photo of a Seiko saying that he's turning his passion into a side hustle so I contacted him and he built this one for me....

I think it is a slippery slope from here on as I already have plans for what I want to do next with him and I have also ordered 3 different coloured straps for this one....

I love it! Clear casing on the rear shows the movement too!

I have that in blue. For the £100 or so it cost me from Creation I can't fault it.
