Apologies if someone has already had a rant about Apple smart watches and the new 2.0 version, but....

A chap at work was proudly sporting his new iWatch 2.0, or whatever it’s called, yesterday, and whilst agreeing with him how sleek and multi-functional and brilliant it is, what I was really thinking was it looked very silly on a middle aged man. As the great Douglas Adams once said, we appear to be a race that still thinks it’s cool to have a watch that needs two hands to operate.

I'm biased of course. I dislike Apple intensely due to the thousands I've had to spend on their rubbish products for my wife and kids over the years, but also because their business ethic appears to be, ‘we only sell one or two things so let’s keep selling the same thing to the same people every couple of years, at twice the price anyone else does, whilst paying as little tax as humanly possible and giving sweet fa to any charity or to anyone other than our few, extremely rich shareholders.

They do this by suckering you in based on how uber cool and technologically advanced the thing is. Then after a couple of years it stops doing something it always used to and the updated OS to make the thing work again won’t install as you need the new model. It’s engineered that way solely to make you buy a new item. My kids are teenages, but they’re already on their second or third iPhones because of this, and it’s exactly the same with their iPads.

Anyway, my thoughts on the iWatch 2.0 POS.

I do feel your pain, but it is only a watch in form factor.

You haven't actually said why you don't like it though other than just being an apple-hater

Like it or not it's arguably the best smart watch on the market

An apple watch on a middle aged man doesn't look as bad as a Rolex Sea Dweller on a 20 something with a bit of dosh to splash around.

My view.

your thoughts on apple, as illustrated in a rant about a man and his watch, you mean?

You're all right - it was a rant at Apple, provoked by my kids schools, which now require the children to have the latest model iPads for interactive learning and homework assignments. No choice in the matter, just, 'we've done a deal with apple and the iPad will be pre-loaded with all the required software and delivered at a reduction of £50 on the standard RRP'.

However, main faults with the iWatch in my opinion are: looks silly, have to press a button to tell the time, has to be plugged in, will only last a few years. Compare that with an automatic watch which; looks good, tells you the time by just glancing at it, never needs to be plugged in, lasts for donkeys years.

You don't press a button to see the time. The watch senses when you raise your wrist and the display comes on.

Firstly, stop calling it an iWatch. Already demonstrates you're an out of touch fart hehe

Secondly, what colour and strap was it? I think the sports models don't look right at all with smart casual or business attire. The Milanese loop or stainless ones however - can't see the problem.

I might be biased as I have the stainless link model. The days have long gone where I use any sort of apps on it, maybe navigation and Apple Pay at an extreme, but it's just a day to day watch for me now.

why are so many people so anti apple in such a vocal way?makes you look daft not apple.
Firstly as pointed out get your facts right first off, it doesn't need two hands to operate at all

If you owned apple you would be trying to maximise profits as well so stop whinging about it, that's what companies do, that's what the shareholders want to do, you have a choice, don't like it , don't buy it, do like , then do buy it...so just maybe grow up a little and join us in the real world

The apple watch, and not just the apple watch, I will say any smart watch that has various fitness apps is a fantastic thing to have...If I had my way all the worlds unfit fatties would have to have one, they would go see their doctor & see what they should be doing to a keep a level of fitness and if they didn't do as advised, get their steps in/exercise seesions ets as prescribed then they would lose their healthcare. NHS is massively stressed so anyway to get people more interested in their own health would be great.
So yes there is a very much great positives in such devices to assist people to monitor their well being, and it should be applauded instead of ridiculed just because ' I don't like apple because its apple'.....

The only person who looks daft on this thread, is the OP for being gullible enough to spend thousands with a company he doesn't like.

I don't like Bose - in fact I feel as strongly about Bose as the OP does about Apple - I think they sell overpriced, inferior crap.... the difference is I have spent a big fat £0 on Bose products and don't feel the need to start threads berating those that do buy Bose products.

I prefer a mechanical watch - but regularly see folk wearing the latest smart watch. I think they look a bit silly - but they probably think the same about me. smile

As for Apple, I have the phone and the laptop. Both were expensive. Both work brilliantly. I can't fault them for doing exactly what I need them to do - in the case of the laptop for 3 years operating 15 hours a day without a glitch.

I have been thinking about an Apple Watch 2 for a while now mainly to help me stick to a diet and excercise routine. I am 38 so possibly middle aged but think that the benefits will outweigh the fact that I might look silly. The sports model is best suited to my requirements, I will use Sat nav function too but will be sad not to wear my Rolex Date Just every day

Not exactly a smart watch but I've got one of these for daily wear and jogging, walking, cycling etc..

Looks a lot better than the Apple Watch imo, lasts 8 days and the screen is always on too!

I've got an Apple Watch 2.

It's my first Smart watch, and actually my first new watch since I was given my trusty old Seiko Kinetic for my 18th birthday 15+ years ago.

Thoughts? I think it's brilliant, really compliments the iPhone.

I've got a 42mm black sport model with black band, and I'll probably buy a black milanese loop band for it at some point for when we go out for dinner, etc.

It's just a very very useful gadget - reminders, messages, phone calls, playing golf, fitness, football scores, taking pictures with your iPhone camera, checking your bank balance, etc. The list is endless!

As has already been said - you don't need to touch the watch to see the time. And as for only lasting a few years - it cost me less than £400. That's almost half the price of an iPhone 7+. If I keep it 2 or 3 years before either getting rid or upgrading, I'd probably still get a good chunk of cash for it should I wish to sell it.
Having said that, there's no way I'd part with £999 for a stainless steel one with link strap, etc.

I generally wear mine from about 6.15am to approximately 8pm every day, and when I take it off and put it on charge it normally still has over 75% battery remaining, so 2 days use is possible.

And as for plugging it in, you don't. You just lay it down on the magnetic charging point. Just like you'd lay a normal watch down on your bedside cabinet. Not an issue at all.

It might not be your cup of tea, OP, but it definitely has its good points.

I don't really quite know why you think smart watches look silly really, never really notice, in fact as I have got older I find that someone wearing a rolex looks a bit daft..kind of look what I can afford etc..I know that's not the case with many people, but I would feel a lot sillier or rather more conspicuous wearing a rolex than I would an apple watch
Just to be clear I do indeed have quite a collection of expensive mechanical watches, but they just sit in the safe nowadays, worn an apple watch for 2 years now & I just find it so useful that I cannot really see me going back to a mechanical one at all, which is really quite a surprise for me having collected some 40 or so watches over many years. You get so used to the 'other things' a smart watch does that I would miss it and a mechanical watch just seems so one dimensional now to me.
Apple watch...pros
Very comfortable, very light
Changeable faces ( so don't get bored of looking at the same thing , jazz it up a bit )
easily changeable straps ( again weekend jazz it up with a bright strap..posh..leather strap..daily silicone sweat strap etc )
Great bedside clock & alarm whilst charging
Fitness monitor, steps, calories, heart rate etc etc
GPS ..walks /runs all mapped etc
Change music on my phone when its in my pocket etc
Oh yes tells the time & its always right
Moves through time zones when holidaying
read text messages when in meetings!
all sorts of stuff it does.....
So when people say to me bah its rubbish that haven't even tried one, well I just think stupid blinkered people who are just anti apple for the sake of it...apple watch is an incredibly useful daily wearer

I can see this thread isn't going well for me, but as someone with a scattering of 301s and 191s I feel obliged to note that Bose can make surprisingly good speakers.

Back to the iWatch, although noted that's not its real name. Looks are subjective, so I withdraw the 'looks silly' comment. Since you put it on a magic disk that charges it by voodoo I also withdraw the 'have to plug it in' comment. And unfortunately as it knows when you're looking at it and then springs to life to tell you how many emails you haven't bothered opening, your heart palpitation rate, or possibly even the time, I'm going to have to withdraw the 'two hands to operate' comment. I would say I bet it's not cheap, but that's quite subjective on a watch forum.

So all I'm left with is to say it is, in my humble opinion, as desirable as a beard.

Got one of these, for test purposes only of course:

Bit tight on the wrist (it was a free-bee with a pair of trainers my son bought), requires 2 hands to tell the time, and looks amazingly silly
