GPS is a major benefit in the second watch.

Cycles, swims and runs only need the watch to track and upload to strava. No phone.

The watch and some wireless headphones on runs with no phone, wires and armband is the dream.
Does the latest version not also have the heart-rate monitor built in using LEDs on the back of the case? Or is that in the next release?
It does although it is about as accurate as a mid campaign general election poll.

n.b - a bit harsh above, it is pretty accurate but certainly not spot on. If you were a semi serious athlete it would not be useful. For me, it's a good enough indication.
When I run or cycle, I use a chest-strap monitor. I've been toying with the idea of a watch for sports and have considered the new Suunto which also offers a LED HR monitor in the back of the watch, but seeing the Apple Watch offers it too has led me to consider that as an option. But if it's not that accurate, then I'll stick to leaving my iPhone in the arm-band holder thingy and use the chest strap

The apple watch will connect to a chest strap - any bluetooth one will do.

Yes.

But not having to faff about with a chest strap would be a nice option.

It doesn't need a chest strap. It has an optical sensor. The output is pretty good, as long as you are doing something like a run. Gym work, it is poor. Swimming too.

This thread has turned many corners in 3 pages.

Lorne vs Apple

Lorne vs Everyone

Lorne vs Beards

And now, somehow, it's a discussion about heart-rate monitors.

Pretty good is OK for us mere mortals, but if you're approaching anything like a serious athlete it isn't accurate enough. At least, that's what the "genius" told me at the time of purchase.

One VERY annoying thing is it thinks it knows how far you have run on a treadmill. So, you set the watch to time your run on a treadmill and do 2k, and the watch says you've done 1.58k with no manual edit option.

Hi Tim,

I was going to make a comment about the sort of person that straps a heart monitor to their chest to see if it's still beating when running; just as friendly dig of course. No doubt the same sort of person that thinks a beard is cool and shows their individuality.

Unfortunately though it appears the apple iwatch accomplishes that particular trick through vodoo magic.

Heart rate info is data. Data is useful. My Garmin fenix 3 will tell me heart rate, the cadence of my running, rise of each step, time spent on the left or right foot and far, far more. It is data central.

No fecking idea why I need the data. I'm a slightly overweight office worker, not an olympic athlete. But I have the data.
