Hello

I want to get a watch for my wife's 40th in a few weeks.

I Like this

Gucci YA139506 Women's Horsebit Stainless Steel Bangle Strap Watch, Silver/White

but would like some help - what would you choose?

Budget is anything up to 1K

Omega De ville is a very nice watch - wife over hers.

Likely to be a bit over budget?

Something with classic style like an Omega is likely to be age a lot better than the Gucci. One other option would be to look at vintage watches.

Hopefully OP knows his wife's taste better than a bunch of internet randoms?

At the risk of sounding snobby, Gucci do not make "proper" watches. They are not a brand that a watch collector would gravitate to. But my real point is that this is completely irrelevant to the fairer sex. Whilst some women will care about the branding, most will pick a name they recognise over an obscure bastion of horology.

So my advice is to take her on a shopping trip and see what she likes.

I was in this exact situation at the end of last year. I know my wife likes big fashion brands like Gucci/Armani etc. but being a bit of a watch snob myself I wanted to buy her a swiss watch. Ended up getting her a Tag Heuer as it ticks both boxes. Well known and fashionable brand and also a well made swiss watch. Plenty of options at around £1k. How about this:

I knew my wife wouldn't appreciate a mechanical watch so got her a quartz model with diamond hour markers.

Bought mine a Longines Hydroconquest 34mm blue for her birthday in June. She loves it.

I think they are excellent value for money and it looks really good in the 34mm size.

Junghans ladies' range might be worth a look.

This one took my eye

Their bracelets are good too, tho' not the mesh which is a bit meh.

I gave mine a choice and she wanted a ladies Tag Aquaracer.

Got it from Iconic Watches for a good price too.

Ladies watches seem to vary in size considerably, but if your wife has small slim wrists then perhaps you should consider something like an Ebel?

Wife wanted this one originally

we both think the Gucci watch now looks a bit 'gran'.

I like this but its a lot more expensive.

This is along similar lines to the Cluse watch:

https://www.johnlewis.com/junghans-047-4252-women'...

It is a 33mm case size. Some of the men's watches are 38mm (the same as Cluse). The Max Bill is an iconic design and a much better watch.

Longines is also a good brand and a large range under £1000.

If you decide to go for Junghans or Longines you should give Dominic Hackett a call as he maybe able to source them at a good discount.

As an update went for the watch below, kindly sourced by Dominic Hackett (fantastic to deal with) who was recommended to me on here.
