I'm looking at replacing the Golf R with an S4, has anyone done this?

Is the S4 similar in performance on A/B roads? Is the MPG a killer compared to the golf?

Anything worth knowing about the S4 other than the spec stuff.

I'll be choosing a standard model.

I'm doing the same.. S4 (Avant) doesn't arrive until next March though so I can't comment much as yet!

I can’t comment on the comparison to the Golf R, but if it helps I’ve had my S4 Avant for 2 weeks now - my long term average is sitting at 23.4 mpg. Best I’ve had on a 45 min motorway run is 28mpg (in efficiency). Driving short trips i.e 10-15 mins on A/B roads it’s around 18mpg.

Only done about 500 miles so far though so the figures should hopefully go up a bit once the engine has run in a bit more.

Absolutely loving the car though!!

So, that's a "Yes" then! smile

In percentage terms, I guess, in reality it'd depend how many miles you do - I regularly get 37-40MPG on a motorway run (about the same duration or more) from my Golf R and 25-30 around town.

Do the sums and work out if the extra cash is worth the extra power/cachet/whatever you'll get with the S4.

You'll find the S4 is a lot heavier on the A/B roads, and consequently won't handle as well as the Golf (or be as involving).

I've (kind of) gone in the opposite direction to you, from S4 (B8.5) to Golf (GTi Clubsport). MPG is broadly similar, Golf is better around town or A/B roads, S4 is better on m-way cruises (although I think that's partly because the Clubsport only has 6 gears, not 7).

I'm about 4000 miles in to my B9 and my average is 25mpg but that's with a fair amount of back road driving. On a motorway/dual carriage way I happily do 35mpg +.

4000 miles in my B9 here, 40% motorway at 70, 20% Motorway at 10 more, 20% A road 20% urban.

Nottingham to Lowestoft, so follwing traffic ( mainly single carriageway) and very conservative overtaking saw 37 mpg.
My average is 30mpg
That's what I like, when you're just steadily getting somewhere in normal A road traffic, then the mpg penalty is miniscule.
when you want to put your foot down, yup, does that too!
And I get 21p from work and another 10p from the taxman for business miles.

The cabin quality is such a step up and it's a lot nicer place to be. Heated quilted leather massage seats anyone?

As a minus you can only half fill a builders bag full of garden rubbish rather than a full one unless you are getting the avant. The boot is deep though.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've placed an order for a standard spec in black and should get it in March.

Doesn't sound like the MPG will be too much of an issue.

Looking forward to it, I might miss the agility of the Golf, but the comfort should make up for it as i'm getting old frownhehe
