Over the years I have noticed a pattern of response to a number of recurring posts:

- I was speeding
- Had an accident
-had or having an affair
-OH left
-committed a crime

In general, when the unwise come to PH for advice, the response is not advice but a lynch mob that builds up in fury to macerate the OP who then disappears, leaving the PH posse to polish its spurs for having run the miscreant out of town. Let's face it, the idiot deserved an even worse fate than the courts assessed and probably should have been stoned.

I wonder why people do this.

While I have never had the need to post such a thread if I wanted advice on speeding for example then I assume that I have admitted my transgression and do not need the torrent of abuse. ( I exclude the superb and objective advice of AGTlaw who actually answers the question rationally).

Seriously, do people think it is admirable to kick someone who is just taking a question?...yes , of course there is negligence and stupidity which is why the issue arose. Presumably the OP knows this.

Do people think internet mob scenes advance anything?

PH is the last place I'd turn to for advice on anything remotely controversial for the reasons above.

Yup, years ago it was brilliant now it's a race to berate the OP.

Please have a read of my response on this thread: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

I think the simple answer is a lot of this negative content just isn't reported to us, so we're not seeing it. If you feel like you're seeing derogatory replies in the future, then please hit the report button so we can take action against it.

Herd mentality.

Once someone jumps on the op, it encourages others and so on it goes. Doesn't actually help anyone having pages of responses denouncing the op but I suppose it makes some people feel superior and part of the 'in' crowd.

It's one of those weird things about PH I just don't get. People feel the need to show how morally superior they are, despite posting anonymously.

For a similar reason, I've never understood why people lie on here to big themselves up. No one knows who you are!

It's one of those things that makes you realise how odd this place is. I've stood in a queue of old ladies at the post office and announced I'm sending off a completed NIP and got nothing but sympathy. On here (a car forum!) I'd be told I was worse than Hitler.

I agree with all that is being said. I asked for some advice regarding my son. I was given abuse and judgement from 26yr olds living with their mums, playing games all night who then got fired from Sainsbury's!

Lots of internet hard men on PH. They will probably look in on this thread but not post as it will show their cards.

'Twas ever thus. Long ago, I posted a picture of plod hiding with a hand held camera close to a motorway and asked if the rules allowed him to do this.

It was immediately assumed by one well seasoned, and much loved, PHer that I'd been caught, was trying to get off and ought to stop whingeing.

I hadn't, I wasn't and I wasn't. He still doesn't believe me and sent me a very rude email the last time I discussed his behaviour...

Really don't understand what makes such people tick.

A lot of posters don't help themselves though. They post hoping that they will get their arse licked, and when it doesn't happen throw a strop.

I’ve said his on another thread, I think an often underused technique is just locking the thread for a period of hours.

It lets the nutters cool off and find something in real life to think about (or head back to the david ike forums).

Many people post their troubles on here because they feel they have no one else to ask, no one to talk too.

It's such a shame that they have to appeal to a pack of strangers for help. I think it's a very Briitsh thing.

Unfortunately PH attracts an awful lot of twunts that reply with things they'd never say to someone face to face. An awful lot of opinionated people believe what they say is somehow important.

I also believe people post opinion and moralistic positioning on here that they wouldn't actually adhere to in the real world themselves. For instance, so many guys post how they'd handle a problem with their other half in a manly and butch way, whilst I suspect they are really sitting alone in a bedsit and have no relationship with their ex, their kids or most of society in general.

The knob-free area seems to be Health, which is nice.

Some of the others, jesus...

You often notice now how people love having a bh about xyz, being a self proclaimed expert etc. Then... someone with real, actual knowledge chimes in, all the armchair experts vaporise.

I do occasionally like prodding some of the Normans with a stick though... whoops.

I think post count plays a big part. If you have less than 100 posts you are a prime target.
A thread popped up last night which whilst not the greatest piece of thread starting was then leapt on by people being deliberately obtuse (IMO)

Sorry, but that thread was one for the cringeworthy thread.

PH is actually a pretty good place for advice. Usually you get 80% helpful replies and the other 20% are knobs who just want to bump their post count.

Shame really.

I agree. Highly predictable to watch. It was clear what the OP meant, I read it and immediately thought he was refereing to the agility and road hugging aspects of a vehicle as opposed to a vehicles straight line speed.

Clear to all but those who enjoy being obtuse.

But yes, it still wasn't the best articulated thread start by an OP for sure.

Funny you make that assumption, I've always seen it as 35+ middle management types who just love to jump down the throat of anyone; daring to admit they are still in their youth (<30, 'millennial'), anyone 'council' or anyone who disagrees with the middle class tory status quo.

It's pretty amusing to push their buttons actually, as also mentioned some forums are worse than others for it.
