what's the point in making a really high quality fake using genuine movement? Bit of a high cost/risk enterprise. Presume the aim is to sell it for the same money as a genuine item (as opposed to the "Rolex for £150 honest" ste that is the subject of this thread) but how much effort, resources, time would it take to get close? Lots... too much?
Different customers. The fakes that are advertised as fakes go straight to the Facebook punters, tourists in Tenerife etc. Superfakes have been bought by jewellers believing them to be real. That's my understanding from the limited info I've found on the superfakes.

Your average pawnbroker will spot a normal fake a mile off but they might pay out a significant sum on an 18karat gold superfake. That sort of thing.

I have two friends, one who owns a steel Hublot Big Bang that he bought from an AD. The other has a fake he bought in Bangkok for £500.

I spent ages trying to tell them apart, one in each hand trying to figure out the weight difference etc. It was impossible.

Having said that, those horrid things are well known as being relatively easy to copy.

And did they get their respective watches back or are they now wearing each other's watch? biggrin

Oh yeah. The friend with the real one is still rather peeved about the whole thing.

biggrin

And uncertain whether he got his watch back?

When I compared my Alpha GMT Pepsi with the Rolex equivalent, the guy who owned the Rolex did a careful check that I handed the right one back. biggrin The only real difference was:
-the angle of the bezel was steeper on the Rolex
-the second hand moved smoothly
-the name was different on the face.

Everything else was pretty much spot on including the st cheap feel bracelet. wink

I guess there's something annoying about having spent 20 times the amount of a close friend on a watch that is utterly 100% identical. If Bangkok boy hadn't been so smug and just not told anyone, the world would think it was real.

It even came with a box the same too!

I agree with you, buying a genuine article is a lot more satisfying that wearing a cheap replica, I wouldn't feel right wearing a replica, it's a bit embarrassing in my opinion.

Yep. You're also buying the expertise in putting the quality movement together which goes beyond just wearing a genuine item.

People don't buy Hublots for that reason...

I've recently bought myself a GMT master II Parnis 'homage' from ebay for £80.

So far it's been a pretty decent automatic, quite well finished and fairly accurate (not properly measured it, but I'd estimate +10s a day). It's a sterile dial (i.e. no maker marks), but for all intents and purposes is a visual copy of the Rolex original. I'm sure it would fool most people(*1) if the dial had Rolex printed on it.

The most amazing thing about the watch, is that it's the first metal bracelet I've ever worn which is comfortable and doesn't pull hairs out of my wrist!

(*1) most people having only seen a Rolex in a high street jewellers window.

Parnis is a mushroom brand.
The seller buys a kit of parts and assembles the watch. So you'll find that the quality of the end product is very dependent on the seller.
It's also important to choose a seller that has a reputation for taking returns, because, let's face it, they are $100 watches.

I can vouch for Manbushijie. You'll find an online shop. Prices are lower when you log in.

I have one Parnis, not a homage. It is one of my favourites and gets more wear than some of the prestige brand watches I have. It came from Manbushijie, the first one was a duffer, it was duly returned and replaced without any fuss.

Yes, I bought from a UK reseller with good feedback, working on the principal that if it fails in the first few weeks I'll send back, after that I'll take my chances...
