Feel free to show it and discuss, i'm lusting after a Christopher Ward Super Compressor!!!

Right, well Mido are one of the Swatch brands, positioned alongside Tissot et al:

but have a history going back to 1918 and along the way have produced lots of innovative stuff – cork sealing mechanism for the crown stem, smallest production automatic movement etc etc.

Much like the Omega Seamaster and the Tissot SeaStar, the Mido Ocean Star goes back decades but wasn´t always what we would consider a ´dive´ watch, resembling more a dress watch but with better waterproofing.

Now, the funky thing about the GMT movement is that it´s a ´proper´ jumping hand GMT, like Seiko, Tudor and Rolex use.

This is really rare and pretty much unknown prior to its introduction at this price point.

Watch Gecko describe it thus:

´.... [a] traveller’s GMT sets differently. The first détente on the crown allows you to set the hour hand, in one-hour increments. Not the GMT hand, but the hour hand of local time. All the other hands are left alone.
The second détente hacks the watch and allows you to move all the hands, in sync.

The reason this is called a “traveller’s” GMT is that the setting seems most suited to a traveller. They get on the plane in Heathrow, pulls the crown to the first position, and advances the hour hand 4 clicks, ready for his landing in Azerbaijan. The local time indicates where he is, leaving the GMT hand to indicate the time back home. The watch seems better suited to a traveller moving between zones, as that is the primary setting method.´

https://www.watchgecko.com/the-mido-ocean-star-gmt...

Anyway it looks an absolute cracker and a steal at about 1/3 the cost of the Black Bay GMT.

Oh BALLS!

WHY did you post that picture?

That is lovely. I'm already wondering if my Christopher Ward Trident Pro 600 and my rather nice Raymond Weil would add up to anything close to the asking price.

The only saving grace is that it is too big for me at 44mm. BALLS!

Just under 5 times thread I think. I'm tempted.

Just been told I have been selected for a new job on promotion so have some extra cash burning a hole and a compelling need for self-congratulation ...

So, Bulova is loved by the PH massif as we all know. Or at least some PHers. But they have a sub brand, Caravelle, that probably is a bit less loved. Anyway, my point is, £40 later on EvilBay and....

CdeG that is both bloody lovely and absolutely fascinating, never heard of them before, some very interesting design cues in there, are you going to get one?

My Steeldive has arrived already and I'm VERY impressed with it, lovely weight and feel to it, smooth second hand movement, the design on the case back is great, and it came with a link removal tool and spring bars and spring bar tool for the Steeldive rubber strap!!!!

Glad you're pleased with the Steeldive.

Not sure about the Mido - I like it a lot but it might be a bit chunky for my office worker wrists. It was Barchettaman that introduced us to them; he's the one to blame!

That's a fantastic looking watch and an absolute steal at that price!!! I'm a huge fan of Bulova and really don't give a toss what others think!!!

Sorry CdeG you're quite correct it was Barchettaman who introduced us to Mido, it's been a long and wearing day.

Guilty as charged. It is rather nice though, albeit Definitely In The Wrong Thread.

In my defence I only mentioned it in the context of why sub-£200 is possibly not the right place to go hunting for a GMT automatic.

Anyway, possible job lot incoming, to console me for the sudden (if not totally unexpected) loss of ALL my work until the end of November. Grrr.

Lovely.....it seems steeldive/san martin/Heimdallr et al have filled the void that was Seikos domain.

I sincerely hope that's not a prelude to something more problematic old chap, we've been through two lots of voluntary redundancies and a compulsory round on the shop floor and the business have just announced a round of redundancies for the office staff this morning!!!

I should be alright, thanks for asking.

It’s just as a self-employed opera singer I rather need the theatres to be open. Just been announced this evening that they’re closed (most likely) through time the end of November.

Anyway back to watch chat!

Blimey, that's not a commonly-heard line!

Must be incredibly tough at the moment; good luck.
