Hi all, I am a bit new to this forum. I have some interesting but not extortionately expensive watches left to me by my father, including an old Omega Deville and a Breitling Astromat (the latter very broken and needing repair).

That said, I have recently bought, second hand and with no box and papers, a Breguet Heritage 5410 in rose gold, for a decent price, as far as I can tell.

My plan is to wear it for a bit, and sell it on. What do you chaps recommend for a good place to selling a watch second hand? Whilst it has no box and papers, I can confirm that it is genuine - it was bought from an insurance company who paid for the watch's loss, only to have the owner find it again in another property of theirs! As is normal, it became the property of the insurer, who sold it on to me (I work in the industry and occasionally stuff like this comes up).

Will post pic when I get it in a couple of weeks, after returning from my business trip. In the meantime, here's a library picture.

How much do folk know about this brand? Frankly, I would not have bought it - but I really liked the design, the price seemed fair, so I thought that if I couldn't move it immediately, I would be happy hanging onto it and wearing it for a while. I know they aren't one of the top brands (they are owned by Swatch, forsooth!), so this isn't an heirloom or long term classic, but I was rather hoping that should I wish to, I could move it on easily enough. Have I made a horrible mistake?

Really? I may have just got a bit lucky then?

That would be nice! It's the resale I am really interested in - but I have a habit of falling in love with temporary purchases and keeping them for ages (witness my just-resolved attachment to Morgan's Aero 8)...

Resale would be trickier than a PP or Rolex, but it all depends what you paid for it. It's going to be in the region of 20k new I suspect.

Lack of box and papers hurt, but if you bought cheap enough....

DomH on here would be worth a call.

Yeah ... Just one of the longest surviving brands, who invented the self-winding mechanism, chronograph, equation of time complication, perpetual calendar complication, tourbillon, and the first ever wristwatch. Plus some 'firsts' with regards to internal components. No big deal. tongue outwink

In all seriousness though, that is one fantastic looking watch! Nice find! smile

Watches of Mayfair in London have one for sale (with box and papers) for just over £16,000. If you come to sell it, then I'd expect a bit less due to being a private sale and missing paperwork. However as JAYB suggests, it would be worth speaking with Dom H on here first ...

I am such a philistine. If it wasn't Rolex, Omega, Breitling or Patek I hadn't heard of it. frown

But the fact that I bought this without knowing much about them should be in my favour I hope! I was not brand name orientated, I just really liked the design of it and the manufacturer looked decent (I didn't really know how decent, as they don't seem to do much advertising). From online research I had Breguet as being a sort of step below Breitling in watch snobbery pecking order, in Omega territory. I sort of liked that I had to research them and had never heard of them.

I have much to learn, it seems.

That's definitely a man's watch, is it?

Should be from the size of it! 42mm high, 12.9mm (!) thick, 35mm wide. May actually be too big for my very small wrist.

I don't really like dive/sports type watches (think Omega Seamasters, Rolex Daytona/Submariner etc). I liked the design of this one.

This list. Breguet do not even make the list of 30. Might not be the most authoritative article, given that Seiko do...

Baume et Mercier made the list too. I'd ignore that website, to be frank!

Harry, you are correct that this is not a top brand watch and is worth very little - probably just a few hundred pounds.

I’m happy to take it off your hands, please PM me your bank details.

If you wanted to sell it I would get an account on Chrono24.

There are a few for sale with dealers in different metal types. I think it might take a little while to sell, particularly without the box or papers, but of course this mainly depends upon your asking price.

I would also probably take it into a Breguet dealer and ask them to produce a document to verify its authenticity. Shouldn't cost too much and will help reassure any future buyer.

https://www.chrono24.co.uk/search/index.htm?access...

I would suggest advertising it around 15% less than the cheapest equivalent one from a dealer. Then would normally be sufficient to get attract people who might otherwise prefer the reassurance of buying from a dealer.

Breguet may not be quite what they were but they are a serious maker.
That's a 10K plus watch even with the lack of box and papers. You could probably buy a box online somewhere and get a letter from Breguet to confirm authenticity.

Whilst selling it would probably pay for your back garden, I'd be tempted to keep it. It really is a proper piece of kit.
