Mrs has a big birthday coming up and, as she did for me, she wants me to buy her a watch.

She has her sights set on a Cartier Tank, yes I know, which retails at around £4800.

Am I likely to be able to negotiate a decent discount on this?

The profit margins must be huge!

Chrono24 can offer a good insight into prices. Assuming you are going auto then your price does not seem too far out.Even picking one up in the US does not save you a huge amount and of course you have to pay tax

She's after the bi metal with blue hands, I've just realised that the gold bits add £2k to the price.

Chrono24 have the one she wants at £4300, I wonder if Goldsmiths or Ernest Jones will price match?

Dom Hackett sourced a Cartier at a very competitive price for me. Well worth a call or email.

didn't cartier recently destroy £4m worth of watches so as to ensure dealers can't discount them?!

Worth popping into Costco if you have one locally as they have had the occasional Cartier - and I had a massive stroke of luck.

About 5 years ago, I was looking for a white metal, square-faced watch for Mrs. Only thing I had found in the High Street was a stainless Gucci for appx £2k but I wasn't that taken with it. Then I happened to be in Costco, looked in the cabinet and there was a Tank Americaine in white gold with diamonds, with white gold deployment, priced at £2,500.

The sales assistant got it out of the case, I examined it, lovely but £500 more than I wanted to spend. Went away to think about it and decided, yep, I'll have it.
Subsequenlty gave it to Mrs and got a very big 'Thank You'!

Some weeks later, I got a call from Costco to say sorry, they priced it wrong and asking for the watch back. Told them it's been given away as present. They then offered me a reward to return it and told me the size of the error - close to a factor of x10. Needless to say, watch stayed with Mrs.

It was this type: http://www.cartier.co.uk/en-gb/collections/watches...

Wow, now that is FANTASTIC, what a find. My Mrs picked up a very nice Raymond Weil in there, don't think she was THAT lucky but saw the same watch in a jewellers for £400 more. So result, just not as good as yours!

Costco is always worth a look, they do get some nice stuff in sometimes.

How well do Cartier watches hold their value in comparison to the desirable model by Rolex?

Thanks for the replies, I'm struggling with paying an extra £2k for a bi metal model, Mrs currently browsing pre owned and has found a firm called Parkers who supply Harvey Nicks and Harrods who have some nice looking stuff.

I'm unconvinced.

When I was looking for a watch for Mrs Knee I wanted to buy a Rolex Datejust and she wanted 'a square watch'. We went for a stroll down New Bond St into the Cartier Store, Mappin and Webb etc and tried a lot of different watches. She kept coming back to the same watch. Cartier make some of their watches in 3 sizes and it is worth trying them on. They also do a number of different square and rectangular designs.

She also went in wanting bi metallic and came out preferring the all steel.

If you can get to London or somewhere like WoS that have a good range I would recommend spending an hour or two trying some on.

Dom Hackett can get a decent deal on new and worth talking to on pre owned as well.

At the end of the day, buy her the one she wants. The pain of the additional cost will soon go and she will love the watch.

I was offered a new Cartier Santos 100 with effectively a 40% discount in a Cartier dealer on Gibraltar, but bought an as new secondhand from Chrono24 at about 60% of list.
My wife has a bimetal santos which again was secondhand to replace a Rolex she never liked, again at a hefty discount from Blowers Hull.
