Hi - I’ve been looking for a watch to go alongside a Tudor grantour that I own, I currently wear my Tudor every day but with my job and lifestyle it takes a bit of a beating. Was thinking of getting a Steinhart as something a bit lower cost and for every day. Haven’t heard much about them so wondered if you guys thought much of them? Other option would be a Tag Formula 1.
Steinhart are a very well established name - whilst I don’t own one I’ve heard good things about the brand and its quality etc.
Personally, I’m not a fan as in my opinion they’re on the line between homages and replicas - they’re quite accurately copying brands like Rolex and Tudor, but obviously not enough to be a fake.
Have you heard of Chris Ward? I’ve had one and was very pleased - more expensive than the equivalent steinhart but they have made the brand their own, with a comparable selection of dive, dress, and aviation (I think) ranges.
Still, the steinharts do look good...

I use a Mk2 OVM as my daily. It cost £300 new. It's a lot of watch for the money. I get why some wouldn't entertain them on "copy" grounds. Their normal Ocean One model is just a Rolex sub copy design wise after all. I like my model aesthetically but also because it's a copy of a limited edition design, it doesn't look like a normal Rolex sub so not many people think I'm trying to buy into the whole Rolex thing. I've spoken to a few people who are into watches who have commented on mine without realising that it was a design copy of a Rolex. I suspect they wouldn't say the same on the normal model.
They're robust, have a genuine quality feel and use a perfectly good ETA movement. I love mine for what it is. I've been after a marine watch and can't decide whether I should get another Steinhart or double my budget and go for a Stowa.

They are well thought of watches where most are Homages, they do a few original pieces though such as the Ocean Titanium 500 which i am considering for a future purchase

Thanks for all your replies! I was looking specifically for a white face and to my knowledge you can’t get a submariner with a white dial so i wasn’t overly worried about the replica reputation. I was also looking at the ocean 2 and it isn’t quite as similar to the sub as the ocean 1 - just wanted to know quality was decent!

I have a Mk.1 OVM, but stopped wearing it after about 6 months, as I found it just that bit too large and heavy for my tastes, was a great watch for the money in every other respect. They're robust, have a genuine quality feel and use a perfectly good ETA movement. I have heard that the Mk.1's are quite sought after now, and so I perhaps should really try and sell it
I also have a watch from christopher ward and would recommend them too
they also have a sale on at the moment

I wonder if the people who have a problem with homages like this also have a problem with AC Cobra replicas or GT40 replicas.

I had one of the original Soprod Ocean 500 titaniums, and it was pretty poor for reliability. It went back twice and the movement eventually became an ETA which has been fine, albeit it runs fast.
It’s consistently fast though (which I think must be a good thing) despite being my go to choice for mountain biking. I put a Bond NATO on it so it has been perfectly comfortable for this and I think the grey of the NATO suits the brushed titanium well.

I’ve got an Ocean GMT which has been worn most days for the last four years, and a Nav-B Uhr bronze hand-wound which is worn very regularly.
Both have been absolutely faultless and keep very good time. The Bronze is so cool, it just gets better with more patina the more you wear it. The GMT really isn’t a replica at all. It’s bigger, thicker and heavier than the Rolex, the bracelet is chunkier and less shiny with no solid end links, the case lugs are completely different, the case back has a nice nautical engraving. Only someone who has never handled a Rolex could possibly think of the GMT as any sort of replica. It’s a homage, full stop.
I can recommend Steinhart unreservedly, for the money you simply can’t go wrong.
