I sitting here with three watches on my mind to act as a daily wear watch. I have a Rolex 19019 day date that I have currently been wearing but am finding the gold a bit soft and its picking up too many marks and dings for my liking. So this creates a need for something that will accept a lot of desk diving and dings and shrug them off. As such I'm not looking to spend a fortune and have a limit of just over a grand.

So far I have reduced my list to three watches I have liked the look of for a while, even though they are rather different to each other!

https://www.chrono24.co.uk/breitling/jupiter-pilot...

https://g-shock.co.uk/gmw-b5000d-1er

I like the story and rigidity of the SAR timer along with the looks. Not sure if it'll look too large on my wrist.

The navitimer is a classic but this one has a twist. I strangely like quartz watches and find the lack of not stopping when not worn over a weekend a huge bonus.

Finally, the G shock. Not sure if I can pull this one off but its all steel for the 35th anniversary. Should be absolutely bullet proof and last for ages.

So, what do you think of my ideas, what have I missed out? Any major issues with the watches I have thought of?

Many thanks in advanve

I bought a 'holiday watch' a couple of years ago that I really like - it looks great and is a clever thing too.

It's a Citizen eco drive, radio controlled thing. Never needs a battery, never needs adjusting, perpetual calendar.... simple button press to change to a new time zone... water proof. It's always deadly accurate and is quite satisfying to see it 'on the time pips' every time - something my more expensive watches never are.

Of those three I'd probably go for the Muhle.

Just a note on the Breitling quartz. I think it uses the same Miyota movement as my Intruder which Breitling were unable to repair. I think that movement is hard to find. Mine also has a strange 'twitchy' second hand which I think is also common on this movement.

I like the Casio but I think that case type just works better in plastic...

thumbup You could certainly add Damasko as a possibility: a wide range from which to choose and Damasko’s ice-hardened steel is as scratch-proof as it gets.

Just to add to the Breitling / Rado list,

As your looking for an every day watch … have you considered reducing the price point,

I recently picked up a Certina in the sales for £500 (which is great) and at tis pricet point there is a huge quantity of choice
Alpine, Ball, Eterna, Glycine, Hamilton, Oris, Tissot, Luminox,, Christopher Ward etc

Why spend twice what one of these watches cost on something that may get bashed about smile

Mühle for me.
I've been wearing my black 29er all week and just love the way it's finished and it's simple elegance.
Good back story on the Mühle too.
If you go to First Class Watches in Kenilworth they'll usually do a deal too.

Wow.

I didn’t realise those were so cheap.

I really like the look of them. I may have to order one to wear as a daily beater.

If you're looking for something that will laugh in the face of general day to day life OP then you can't go wrong with the above suggestion. I've 3 Damaskos, I'll admit that they get worn in rotation with other watches however there isn't a single mark on any of them.

Other than that, and if you're concerned about cosmetic marks, I'd recommend something that has polished and/or brushed surfaces over bead-blasted ones. An individual polished/brushed surface can be easier to DIY "repair" (eg Cape Cod for polished, refinishing pad for brushed) whereas a marked BB case would need to be completely refinished.

If a G-Shock is acceptable to you as a daily, which it would appear to, then you can't really go wrong with any of the Radio Controlled, Solar Powered versions. Theoretically no need to ever maintain them, or even re-set the time or date.

If you want a mechanical then Damasko (already mentioned) or Sinn are worth a look - the tegimented Sinn's are incredibly tough, or you could spend less & get a Seiko.

I'd buy with a bracelet if possible - they last a lot longer than straps.

As much as I like them, I couldn't stomach £450 for a G-shock, despite being a steel limited edition.

The Breitling looks cheap IMO.

Go for the Glashütte

Definitely a Sinn or Damasko three hander at that price point.

Chronomaster sell both - no connection other than as a happy customer.

Tudor 36mm Black Bay or Heritage Ranger should be available second hand at around 1300GBP. Might be worth considering..

G-Shock looks tempting. Affordable and not covered in a cheap plastic...

Thank you all for your ideas and suggestions. Lots to think about. I knew the movement in the breitling could be a issue as the don’t service/support it any more. It came in other watches so the only option would be to canabalise one of those, but they are getting rarer and rarer too these days.

The damasko watches with ice steel look interesting, I’ll have to look into them further along with cheaper options suggested by others too.
