So I’ve been on a couple of wait lists for a LV sub for a few years. Not looking promising.

I’ve got my 40th coming up in October and want to buy a keeper.

What are my chances of a no date sub by then as an alternative?

I’ve had a couple of watches off a local AD, and that’s where I had most hope of the LV........

And that’s probably still your best bet (if you want new). Just keep the conversation going with them, and maybe buy another watch or two while you’re waiting ...

I got a date Sub within about 3 months of enquiring.

Good luck!

Vote with your wallet and buy a keeper from another manufacturer rather than play the silly Rolex game. There are plenty of other options!

I’ve had a Rolex, Tudor, and misc. jewellery from my AD, and they can’t put a time frame for ‘my’ LV.

A no-date I got inside a week (2 years ago, mind) and I was told ‘a couple of years’ on a hulk a couple of years ago...

This is what you should do.

It doesn't matter whether or not you want to buy anything else from the AD. The trick is to spend, spend, spend on other things, then casually drop the hint that you might be interested in buying a Rolex at some point in the future, should the dealer decide that you are worthy.

If you are attractive, try going to the shop and winking at the dealer whilst slowly, seductively removing your clothing. If you're unattractive, try threatening to remove your clothing if they don't sell you that Rolex.

Offer to take the dealer out to lunch. A swanky London hotel should do it. Or better still, invite them to holiday with you in your South of France villa. All expenses paid. Rent one for the occasion if necessary, the more bedrooms the greater your chance of buying that Rolex. Any villa you chose should have at least one indoor and one outdoor pool and be close to the sea. Hire a Michelin starred chef for the week. Preferably a T.V. one.

Offer the dealer a massage. With lovely scented oil and a smorgasbord of tantalising extras.

Remember, this isn't just a watch, it's an investment, an unobtainable goal, an overt means to signal to your fellow man that you have made "it", that you have impeccable and discerning taste, that you take quality seriously.

Prostrate yourself at your AD's mercy! Drop your pants and expect and enjoy a jolly rogering, whilst they empty your wallet. But prepare yourself for disappointment, because that's how the veblen effect works. It's necessary for you to do all this. The harder you try, the harder the dealer must make you try. The closer you get, the further away your goal is moved. But that's good, because it just makes you want it more.

Or tell them to ram the Rolex up their hoop and buy an Omega.

Sick to death of Rolex and their stupid games.

I second that. I was trying the Rolex route and you just get shafted.

There are some nice Omega's out there, or save some money and get yourself a new Tudor Black Bay 79220N. I have that watch and also a new Omega Speedmaster 57 'Broad Arrow', couldn't be happier. Check out Chrono24

That made me laugh, very well written and very funny. I even pictured the villa as I read it.

Alternative boring answer: a 'non-date' Sub took me around 3 months to get from my local AD (Goldsmith's Chelmsford) for a mate's 30th, and I sent another mate in and he bought a 'date' Sub for himself which took around 6 months (arrived in time for his 50th).
I have 'registered my interest' for an LV I'll let you know if I get anywhere.

I see a little frustration and a recognition that the ends nowhere near justify the means.
I also see ridicule (guilty m'lud.) I haven't got one, don't want one, I don't like the style. I'm just poking fun at the lengths people seem prepared to go to. As you say, it's just a watch

I don't see any anger.

Eh, its down to who controls the lists in the AD.

I got quoted a year for a date sub, ended up on my wrist 3 days later because the AD said i was a nice person to them.

There are no lists. This has been discussed at great length on PH

This. When I went to my AD and asked to confirm my position on the list, their reply was that a person who has registered their interest will be contacted, but at the dealer’s discretion

I am on the imaginary list for a Daytona as target is my 50th in 2021. I bought a Tudor from him recently and reminded him. I'll probably buy another at somepoint in the near future just to remind him I exist.

Its a game.

Don't get your knickers in a twist over terminology, lads.

Just be a nice person to the AD and catch him when it's quiet, and you too can get a sub date in 3 days flat. Maybe.

If you want the watch just buy one there are loads for sale there is no shortage just look on WF or any other grey dealer stock, the greys are helpful as they normalise what is a strange market at the moment for a sports Rolex, you'll lose the grey dealers margin as you walk out of the store but that's normal isn't it and something you'd experience at the AD if you could just go in a buy one off their shelf too.

You think Watch Finder is helpful ? seriously.

It's almost as if them and Rolex conspired to create a £20k Daytona made from pure steel !

They (and others) allow the watch to be bought at the current market rate and normalise the transaction, a quick glance of the grey market shows you there is no shortage of the product.

The market has put the Daytona at the price it's at, and I seriously doubt Richemont are proactively helping Rolex but they'd love to be in the position with their brands obviously.

Not at all. I couldn't give a monkey's. I'm not in the market, so it doesn't affect me.

However I find it crazy the hoops people think they should have to jump through to buy a watch. It is lunacy to advise someone to buy stuff they don't want in order to ingratiate themselves to an AD, on the off chance they may be allowed to buy something they do want. Surely you can see that?

I wrote what I wrote because I thought it was more imaginative and entertaining than simply writing "You have lost all sense of proportionality." Also, I like to extract the urine occasionally. jester

But if you prefer to think of me as bitter and of the nonsense pedalled about how to obtain a new watch as sane, then that's fine by me. We both think the other is nuts! rotate
