Has the Rolex bubble finally burst? Perhaps it has
Discussion
First scratch you'll remember. I remember scratching my 16600 sea dweller bracelet in two places at the same time within a few days if purchase. They really stuck out
Wearing that same watch right now, 12y later, which has been serviced but not polished and I cannot see the scratches. I know where they were but there are that many scratches on the bracelet now that the original two don't stand out

the brushed metal hides scratches much better I find
Although jubilee (which is polished but very small links) also hides scratches better than polished oyster, Rolex seems to know this as the GMT jubilee are higher RRP than oyster
A fibreglass pen will take out scratches from brushed bracelets, if you can be bothered.Although jubilee (which is polished but very small links) also hides scratches better than polished oyster, Rolex seems to know this as the GMT jubilee are higher RRP than oyster

Oh dear...less than one week of ownership i have somehow managed a scratch deep enough to catch your nail in on the clasp.
Almost worthless now.
The gold clasp is so damn easy to scratch. For me my gold and bimetal watches are for occasional wear, I don't care about resale value but I don't like the look of the scratches. I don't care at all on my steel watches.Almost worthless now.
For that reason I was thinking about one of those protective films just for the clasp on my gold pieces. I know people will criticise but I just don't like there to be deep scratches on a watch that is used for special occasions.

That was my plan for this watch after previous experience but, but before the specific model protective film arrived, I couldn't resist wearing it.For that reason I was thinking about one of those protective films just for the clasp on my gold pieces. Like you, with the exception of a 2 tone daytona that looked tiny on my wrist so never wore, I don't sell watches so no big issue.
Scratches are all part of the ownership.
When it gets its 5 year service it shall come back like new; eat, sleep, repeat!
I don't actually like bimetal bracelets, so mine is in the safe and the watch is wearing a Hirsch leather strap, until the custom curved ended one arrives...
So no scratches! I did manage to scrape the rose gold bezel against a brick wall whilst plugging some cables into some speakers recently, so it's no longer a pristine example anyway...

Do they still polish watches when you get the 5ish year service?Like you, with the exception of a 2 tone daytona that looked tiny on my wrist so never wore, I don't sell watches so no big issue.

I've only really been collecting a few years so none of mine have been in for a service yet.
If they do polish then I'll wear it more often because it's one of my favourites.

Had my 2nd service on my sub/date.
Both on the (1st) at 5 years and (2nd) 12 years, delayed due Covid service and polish the watch. Came back looking brand new! Think you can ask for a sympathetic service without polishing.
Be aware that they will look over the watch with a fine tooth comb and report ANY imperfections no matter how small or insignificant.
As long as the suggested "to do list" of items are mentioned on the 2nd page (option list) you have the right to decline. If the items are listed on 1st page of the ROLEX initial report they will not service the watch without you first confirming you agreed to the additional works, ontop of service.
FYI 2nd Service was done few months ago. £720

Once that metal is gone it’s gone, though*. There are some pretty bad examples of Rolex polishing around.
Sorry should have clarified, my date sub is a stainless version.- steel can be rebuilt with laser welding
Perhaps need to take greater care with a Rootbeer or other metals.

I think they polish all watches regardless of what service it is. As above, you can ask them not to.I've only really been collecting a few years so none of mine have been in for a service yet.
My OH's steel datejust jubilee (non-fluted bezel) has just been returned from Rolex London looking new and I approved the polish. It took almost exactly 4 weeks. I probably wouldn't have a fluted bezel polished as they can look less sharp.
I would add that I don't have my watches serviced until they stop working - there seems little point as the cost of a service and the cost of a repair (unless there's some catastrophic damage) are almost identical.
