Getting weekly offers of watches at the moment.
Haha how embarrassing. Tell them you ll add their name to your list, and contact them if they re lucky.I stopped him in his tracks and told him quite firmly that both he and his store were very fortunate to have me spend my money with them.
The penny didn’t drop immediately but he got the message.

Had an interesting conversation a few years ago with a SA at my local AD , he told me I was very fortunate to get some of the watches I had bought from there.

I imagine at this point there are a number of sales assistants in the AD's who have only known what it has been like for the last 3-4 years so probably don't remember a time when they were offering discounts on watches and think it is the norm for people to be gratefull to purchase from themI stopped him in his tracks and told him quite firmly that both he and his store were very fortunate to have me spend my money with them.

You're always best advised to be nice to people on the way up as you'll probably see them again on the way down, when they were selling £10 notes for a fiver I can see that they were being good to those that were receiving them and it would show a equal amount of entitlement for the customer not to recognise that. (unless of course they were paying handsomely through the nose on other items to get the watch) which may have been the case.
I remember a customer "telling" me that he'd spent £14 million with me, you have and in return I've given you £14 million worth of goods so I'd say that was a fair exchange.

Which is fine, unless you had preceded it with, "You're lucky I sold you those goods."I remember a customer "telling" me that he'd spent £14 million with me, you have and in return I've given you £14 million worth of goods so I'd say that was a fair exchange.

I was buying Rolex watches 25 years ago from the same AD , well before the covid lockdown came and demand went through the roof , well before the Shiney suited spivvy salesman turned up and turned his nose up at those who wouldn’t grease his palms , allegedly m’lud you must understand.I remember a customer "telling" me that he'd spent £14 million with me, you have and in return I've given you £14 million worth of goods so I'd say that was a fair exchange.
Those same sales people who now have to graft and use selling skills they previously didn’t have to try and sell to a diminishing market.
I’d politely suggest it is them that suddenly have to nice to their customers now not the other way round in my case.
Picked this long awaited beauty up today - I didn’t really think it would ever happen with my decent but not crazy spend history. Had a really interesting chat with the salesman regarding the market and he was pretty candid - on many Rolex models he’s having to make a few calls to get the watches sold, but they are still comfortably selling their allocation. I think the market is now in a good place really - most models now selling used under or near list.

My old man's been on a 'list' for 2 years with no purchase history.
Rang last week just on a whim to ask what was happening with his wish list and got a call yesterday for a Sub.
Not sure if that's an indication that reality is returning or not but yeah... Result for him.
I suspect that ADs are selling fRang last week just on a whim to ask what was happening with his wish list and got a call yesterday for a Sub.

Well there were certainly people buying while I was in the AD today but yes - definitely quieter than I’d have expected of a summer Saturday afternoon. Rolex will be fine, I feel for some of the other brands though…Omega & JLC spring to mind - they raised their prices hugely over the last few years and I imagine they might be struggling a bit with that now…

I’ve had some grim invite to a Patek evening at a London AD - if they’re sending me that email they’re definitely on their arse. Even if I did want to buy one I cannot imagine the level of helmet that would actually attend an event like that.

I’m not sure about that, I’d still say you were the lucky one and agree with your customer. Unless you were selling something where demand was massively outstripping supply. Like Rolex were / are.yellowtang said:

But this would be a totally different story, it’s really really nice

I think Omega will be fine, they have the whole Swatch group behind them. yellowtang said:
