I might have to post a watch valued at just under 3k. What’s the best service?

I've used Royal Mail Special delivery by 1pm on an item of that value before.

RMSD is fine but anything more than about £3k I'd take the time to deliver it myself.

Probably this.

I had to return a watch to Barclaycard because I'd rejected it. It was worth more than Royal Mail would insure so I sent it via a specialist courier. It cost Barclaycard £280.

Careful, as others have said on here - Royal Mail Special Delivery only insures up to £2,500.

I also saw that some posted that if you posted an item valued £3,000 it would void the whole transaction. I.e. even if you were willing you swallow the £500 difference, Royal Mail don't see it like that and it invalidates the claim.

Do the research to be sure.

Which makes sense, as a more expensive item brings more risk of being "lost".

I’m in the process of selling some watches currently and I realise this probably isn’t helpful to the OP. One of my criteria is that the buyer has to have a location close enough that I can take the watch to them for inspection. I know watch hobbyists send four and even five figure watches in the post routinely, but I just can’t stomach the risk. Even though 99+% of the time it would be fine, I’d accept a slightly lower price just to not have a sinking feeling for a couple of days while the package was en route that a few grand just got flushed down the bog.

I'd use RMSD for a watch up to about £3k.

Anymore & I'd either hand over face to face, or ask the buyer to arrange a courier at his risk.

Tough one this OP. Royal Mail won’t cover a £3k watch as their limit is £2500. If it gets lost you will need proof it’s worth £2500 and not £3000. If they can prove it’s worth £3k they won’t cover you for any of it.

Even RMSD items do get lost every now and again so bear that in mind.

Most couriers have jewellery and watches on their exclusions list. I’ve never been able to find a courier that will insure my watches.

Really the only option I’ve ever found is to collect or drive it yourself.

You can take out your own insurance cover, I used the insurance broker dot com to bring a 7k watch from Italy to the uk, cover was £52.

Have a look at Secursus:
https://www.secursus.com/

They offer insurance for several posting methods, including RMSD.

I never really figured out the best way to do it when I was sending a watch to Watchfinder so just instead drove it there in person. A 6hr round trip... but worth it for expensive watches.
