Afternoon everyone,
Never really ventured into this part of the forum before so hope I am not intruding! My grandfather sadly passed away towards the end of last year and left his watch to me, interestingly I never knew he owned it as I am sure I never saw him wearing it! Due to various things going on I had only sneaked a quick peek at it, but thought I would sit down and go through it all this afternoon and have a better examination, so I simply thought I would share a few pictures in case they interested anyone.
I am ashamed to say that if anyone had asked me who 'Patek Philippe' was before being given the watch, I wouldn't have had a clue. That has now changed - having done some research, reading and checking out other PP watches, wow...some stunning watches! I have always liked watches, but never had anything very special or bought many, I have been wearing a Seiko divers watch for the last 5-6 years which I love. Anyway, enjoy the pictures below, it was just as fun admiring the watch itself as going through the various paperwork. I don't think GDPR now would approve of me having the original purchasers' name and address! It looks like they bought it in 2002, based on the service stamps it has only been serviced once in 2008 (perhaps when my grandfather bought it?) - should I take it somewhere for a service? (no idea what this would cost..?!).
I am certainly looking forward to being able to wear it to the first 'nice' event etc. once CV19 is over.

That’s a stunning watch to remember him by. Classy, understated & top-tier watchmaking. Something to be really proud of, but will likely go under the radar as ‘just’ a gold dress watch for anyone not into watches (a good thing in my book).
I know not everyone likes a display case back, but with something as nicely made as a Patek, it’s a real bonus to be able to see that hand-finished movement.
Also, leaving branding & value aside, for me the personal meaning behind a watch like that is what really makes it so treasured.
A Seiko Diver & Patek Calatrava Travel Time might well be the perfect two-watch collection.

UK Patek ADs can organise servicing, which is through the Patek in house Rhone Products centre in Chalford St Peter. I had a simple watch sent in before first lock down, and it took about 4 months. Expect a 4 digit bill for a regular service on a complication.

If it's working and keeping time, no need to have it serviced. Worn parts cost very little to replace (even Patek), it's the cost of taking it to bits that is the costly part. Expect north of £1,000 for a standard service and months to get it back!
Seriously beautiful watch - and a Travel Time too. It should be insured - it's a costly object.

Thank you everyone for your comments, it will certainly be cherished and I hope something I can eventually pass on! I can't wait to wear it to a nice event/outing!
Might be giving it a miss on the service front for the time being...I will see how it goes with respect to keeping time, etc. but it all seems fine.
Reference insurance...very good point indeed...should I take it for a valuation or would one of you gents be kind enough to message me with help on this front?

I'd be looking at around £15,000.
For me & my area this is able to be put on my normal household insurance as an itemised item for pennies

Talk to your household insurer about the watch. Given the value many insurers have very specific conditions about storage, professional valuations with clasp check. Most Patek ADs or quality jewellers will give you an insurancevaluation, but they will need a physical inspection to sign off it is not a cheap knock off.What a beautiful watch to be handed down to you.
Wear it with pride and as the other posters have said, make sure you insurance it and give it a service if you're not sure of when the last one was. Patek's hold their value extremely well, but if I was you i'd keep in the family and keep passing down if you can.
