Hi all

Any recommendations for a cheap (iOS compatible ) smart watch? Lots of choices on Amazon, but I’m not really sure which one would be “best” / good value? Would only be used when running and possibly swimming in my above ground pool.

Ideally I don’t want to carry my phone on me when I go for a run, so looking at something that would sync afterwards?

I’d opt for Apple watch. A used 5 will cost the same as a knockoff & will be far better in every way..

I’d tend to agree, been impressed with mine and the integration is seamless of course.

My Apple watch just sits on it's charger now. I got very fed up of having to charge it overnight, every night!!

So, I got myself an Amazfit T-rex Pro, £119, does all the notifications etc (haven't tried any of the sport tracking stuff, but it is the sponsor of a US fitness thing called Spartan, so must be ok?)

But, It has at least a 3 week battery life, looks more like a G-shock design, rather than the boring rectangle of the apple watch. I do like apple stuff, but unless apple really up their game with the watch, I won't go back.

Same here except my Apple Watch has been replaced by a Garmin fenix for my sports activities and I am wearing my ‘proper’ watches instead the rest of the time. JLC today Ad it happens.

Took me about a month to wean myself off the notifications and things and the constant health stuff but I’m pleased I have made the switch.

I thought I'd do an update on this thread and share my conclusion to the problem I originally posted.

Shortly after posting I stopped wearing the Apple Watch completely and went back to rotating my other watches on a regular basis. The Apple Watch sat on it's charger and pretty much became a bedside clock and occasional alarm.

However as the weather has got warmer and short sleeves are now more prevalent I've noticed that a lot of people are wearing a normal watch on one wrist and an Apple Watch or Fitbit type devices on the other. Initially I though that was a bit daft when it was suggested earlier in the thread but after looking at it a bit deeper decided that the if I used the Apple Watch primarily as an information device rather than a time piece that could work for me.

So after configuring the watch-face to a modular view I tried it out and after a month I'm pretty happy with it. So I now get the pleasure of wearing my mechanical watches with the convenience that the Apple Watch provides.

Hi Voodoo - what made you change from having it on permanently, to not at all?

Have to admit, I can't wear smart watches. I had a fairly simple one which counted steps (great!) but also your heartbeat - and I became paranoid about it and googling all the time what should be a 'good' heartbeat. I decided that I wouldn't be able to cope with that, never mind all the additional Apple stuff as I am a bit of a health worrier - so gave up on it all completely. I just use my phone for step-counting and then a regular watch instead which makes me happy. smile

But interested as to what made you stop wearing after being so into it?

Cheers

The new Apple Watch Ultra looks pretty cool. Certified dive computer, 100m of water resistance (stand by for the dynamic pressure folks to chime in), the 86db siren is interesting too.

I don't need one, but it does look cool.

Yep, I would be very tempted....... but £849!!! And still only 36 hour battery. As I already said above, my T-rex pro just got charged last night when it dropped to 30% battery, didn't really need it. I checked and I last charged it 13 days ago. So 70% loss in 13 days. If the new Apple watch gave me half of that I'd consider it.

And apple were going on about the better sleep tracker etc. You can't wear them overnight as you have to bloody charge them.

The term 'double wrist' in my opinion is already up there with 'wrist time', 'pull the trigger' and 'wear it in good health'.

Very tempting though, does it state how long it takes to charge?

I am pretty much on the same page.

I believe Apple is threading Rolex's steps (around what, 70 years later?) in creating a diver/extreme sports watch so people can give the impression they are actually divers/extreme sports persons; the vast majority of those will only see the shower.

And guilty as charged, I have a Planet Ocean certified up to 600 meters but never took it more than 2-3 meters.

Looking for opinions.

Is the new series 8 worth the 150 quid more over the new se? The only real difference I can see is no ecg (is this a novelty? And no head sensor for tracking ovulation (not much use to me).

But will be worthless in 3 or 4 years

Eg Apple trade in for my 3 year old Watch5 (£500 new) is £69. So Apple themselves value it little.

The new ones are nice, but effectively a throw away item in a few years.

But £850 for 4/5 years life is pretty cheap per day.

Of course, it’s a piece of technology and technology ages out.

I’ve just paid off my Apple Watch Series 6 and upgraded to an Ultra. For me it’s a useful upgrade, as I work quite a lot on site, at utility company sites and carrying our demolition work to buildings so I’m swinging hammers, crowbars and wrecker bars about. The flat sapphire screen and lip should help protect it.
I also use mine for sleep tracking and the biggest pain has been charging it every day before bed. The bigger battery and faster charging should be useful here; and finally my partner and I do a regular run through thick woodland and her watch data is very different to mine at the end, so hoping the improved GPS will give more accurate results here.

Apple seem to have not considered the benefits of a tough watch for people doing jobs like mine.

Sorry for the late response but I've only just seen this.

I suppose the key reasons I stopped wearing the Apple Watch was that I missed wearing a mechanical watch and I started to feel the Apple Watch was creating a competitive (exercise) element in my life that I started to resent.

I've now changed the settings so it has now become an extension of my phone rather that a health/exercise tool and I still wear a mechanical watch everyday.

Can anyway answer this ?

I'm thinking of getting my wife one for Christmas but don't know which one. I'm also assuming the smaller versions are more suited for Ladies ?

I had the SE, I hated it as the watch face wouldn't display all the time.

I only had it for 3 months, but I sold it and bought a 7 as the face displayed all the time. For me it would be a completely no brainer to get the 7 or 8 over the SE. Battery life is also a lot better.
