Polywatch worked a treat. All my clumsy scratches are gone. New black bezel and black silicone curved end strap is on the way from aliexpress.

Thats a really smart watch and great value if it is the auto!

Glad to see that worked out for you. Too many times I've seen it fail, including personal experience with my Casio Duro.

The scratch was caused by my cat, which was surprising. Keep your watches away from the critters!

Back on the more usual discussions I would really appreciate a review from any of the recent Phorcydes purchasers. Particularly re the bracelet. As a hairy man will I suffer the indignity of girlish yelping when it extracts my wrist hairs.
Hi 1690cc, in my experience the bracelet on my 4A is a little sharp when putting it on but once on the wrist it is very comfortable. The short 'beads of rice' style allows it drape on the wrist and I've had no issues with it pulling hairs.

I haven't visited this thread in a while, mainly as I've been behaving on the watch front and not purchased a new one in ages. But a little browse on AliExpress is always a downfall and I ended up buying this.

I keep seeing this in Google results and I do like the retro style and love that shape of watch, but figured it would probably be rubbish quality in reality, but looks good in your pic.

Do the subdials actually do anything or are they just pretend?
Well, you can never quite tell when it's super cheap but I have bought at least two analogue watches from AliExpress on a whim for under £20 and both have been a pleasant surprise. One was a quartz Seagull 1963 and this.

Both of them have subdials and the subdials work perfectly. So in this case, the bottom dial counts seconds and the one to the left counts minutes. You stop it, reset and both spin back into position.

I'd say the only criticism I'd have about this is the bracelet which does feel cheap but that's often the case with watches costing much more. Nothing a brown leather strap wouldn't sort.

Great result on the Stürhling.

The crystal on the Casio Duro is *unbelievably* hard. I got 80% of the scratches out on mine with Polywatch Glass and a Dremel/felt ended thingy. It took for ever.

This looks ok for under £80, 15% off for new users.

San Martin GMT mini-review

Not much to add to what is already online about this watch, but we all love a review on here, don t we?

Anyway this watch is all about the face and finishing. That wave dial (desert sands? Something like that) is just exceptionally nice. The indices are crisp and excellent. We will come back to it.

Brushed and polished finishes/edges seem crisp and well done. This has a fixed bezel.

The bracelet has polished centre links and is a bit blingy for my tastes. Those of you who have met me will know that I am a quiet, modest and understated chap who likes to keep a low profile so it s a bit OTT.

It s solid and seems high quality. No rattles or dodgy links. Screw pins on these (I prefer push pins but that s me).

The clasp has a glide lock function. Not something I need or know anything about so I can t compare or evaluate it.

One thing: I don t know if it s by design, but the lugs sit higher than the end links, so they re not flush with the case. I suspect there was an absence of design coordination there, or they just bunged on the bracelet they had. The radius of the end links fit the case circumference very nicely, though.

Sapphire crystal on these but the reflections are pretty awful. A white face and white/silver hands does not a legible dial make, at least for my eyes. Plus the GMT hand just adds to the confusion. Call me old fashioned but I do like a watch face that I can easily tell the bloody time on.

The NH34 sits at +2 seconds per 24 hours. I got a good one. This is no guarantee that yours will be as good, but it indicates that San Martin regulate the movements well before they case the watches. Excellent.

Proportions - and this is obviously subjective- are perfect. 40mm, 20mm LW, a height of 13mm is fine for this movement. The GMT hand adds to the stack height of the NH34.

The WR of 100m is likely to be sufficient. A screw-down crown adds reassurance. It also screws smoothly into the case.

It s been sold already at a reasonable profit here in Germany.

I have a big(ish) birthday coming up and am looking for suggestions for (obviously) a sub £200 watch that my son could buy me – Actually I’ll probably end up buying it and getting paid back but you get the idea.

I do have a ‘few’ watches but would like to add an analogue, white faced, 40mm, water resistant one to my ensemble. I’ve spent a bit of time browsing but can’t hope to match the PH hive mind.

I do not (much) care about the brand or what type of movement, although I do like the second hand to sweep. Thank you for any and all suggestions.

If only someone could post an honest unbiased review of such a watch.

I can highly recommend the Citizen NY0040-09W. It’s a lume dial but comes across as white in photos. Keep an eye out as they come up on Amazon around £165-200. It’s a tough piece of kit and saw some scuba action in Asia. Not my photo:

What is your 'style' / preferred type of watch?

Diver / formal / dress / small / large / chrono / super-legible 3-hand / leather / bracelet / flashy / understated... ?

I was trying not to be too prescriptive in case I missed something but to follow your multiple choice :

40mm / waterproof / super-legible 3-hand (white face, so dark blue/black hands) / leather or bracelet / somewhat understated

Maybe consider a birth year watch, there are some stunning vintage watches available.

Good suggestion from Llama - although I'd suggest a much cooler colour, like mine biggrin

Works really well with a black or brown strap too - a pretty versatile watch

Another suggestion, which doesn't really meet the brief but is a great white-dialled watch, is this Steeldive. I have STILL not convinced the sub-200 crew that it is fantastic, but what do they know?

Obviously it's an homage, but it's really well made, and also works well on a leather strap. Also - gotta love a GMT!
