Guys, not a watch topic but I know we do tolerate the odd jewellery question around these parts smile

So I need to get a wedding band. I wear stainless steel watches only (have my grandad's gold Rotary but very rarely wear it). As such, I am looking for a ring that matches ss; silver, platinum, etc.

I do also have my grandad's rose gold wedding ring which in an ideal world I'd love to have sized for me due to the sentimental value but it is just not "me".

As someone who would otherwise not wear any jewellery I don't think I would necessarily appreciate having the best of the best (platinum?) on my finger. I am leaning towards a silver ring to keep things a bit more modest.

Does silver make for a suitable wedding band material? I know it tarnishes but it can also be cleaned... What would you do in my position?

Cheers,
Dan

White gold is a good option there. Also titanium if that sort of colour appeals.

I considered titanium but doesn't it have a bit of a greyer tone?

White gold I would consider. I understand it has to be re-plated periodically?

With white gold I would imagine the rhodium plating will need refinishing on a ring sooner or later. I'd choose platinum on that basis. No one will care what it's made in my experience.

I’ve had a white gold one since 2000 and it’s still looking good. Haven’t had it replated and it’s never taken off.

Ti is a darker more matt finish yes.

Platinum
I do like the idea of platinum as hers are platinum and it will be a nice match as such. Just don't know if I'll "appreciate" having platinum over silver if you know what I mean.

Is that what you went for I presume?

(You got married last year didn’t you and I know most of your watches are ss)

In that case I’d just go platinum.

I didn’t care for platinum, so have palladium. No complaints.

Palladium. Very similar to platinum without the cost

At least that’s how it was sold to me 9 years ago.
No complaints and a polish from a jeweller keeps it looking smart

If you go 9ct white gold it doesn’t need to be re-plated IME.

Platinum is obviously nice but if you’re not a big jewellery person then there is probably other things to spend the money on.

You might surprise your self with the rose gold ring you have, I’d encourage you to wear for a few days.

When we had our rings made in summer 2020, platinum was cheaper than all the other metals mentioned above, except silver.

Platinum D shape for me and have a titanium one for knocking about.

Was a his and her’s thing.

But depending on size and budget…it’s up to you, but do try different shapes and sizes regardless of material chosen.

I got married seven years ago. Had never worn a ring and didn’t think I’d get on with one so was reluctant to invest in something I might not wear. I was looking at a simple band and the jeweller suggested getting silver and having it platinum coated with the view that if I got on with it I could have a platinum one made in the same style. It was peanuts in the grand scheme of things. Seven years later and I wear my ring every day. Never felt the need to have the same ring made in platinum as this is “my wedding ring”. It barely cost a decent meal out.

Exactly what I was going to say.

First time round had gold but this time went for the more robust palladium and to kind of match the wife’s platinum ring

My best mates both have palladium (I think) but apparently it is currently quite a bit more expensive than platinum so can't see me going down this route. Nice material though.
