there are parts of my own city i won't go to to avoid risk.
It's like this in most cities. The city planners in London however seem to think that no matter how much someone spends on a decent place to live, it's okay for them to put up some no income housing next door. Effectively making sure that unless you move out of the city, you can't get away from this sort of crap.I pointed this out in another thread and got yelled at for being.... I don't know, pragmatic?
little habits i have, like whenever i go into a pub i don't know i am always looking round to see where the fire escapes/ other entrances/exits are... just in case! .. bit of a mental thing but i'm always clocking what's going on around me when i'm out in public

Not to stray off too far off topic but I did grow up in London and have lived in Texas and Georgia for the last 22 years, traveling through the US frequently for work. Crime happens but muggings don't really exist so much in pro 2a states. Neither are night time break ins when the house is occupied.
All of a sudden, that 70 year old Vietnam veteran isn't an easy victim.
The murder rate in Texas is 4x higher than the UK, but sure. All of a sudden, that 70 year old Vietnam veteran isn't an easy victim.

Yeah, if someone gets shot they'll probably die. The high murder rates are mostly attributed to gang/drug related activities. That happens on the wrong side of the tracks and does not spill into where I live or frequent. Edited by alabbasi on Friday 21st October 19:58

yeah, 100%.. there are areas here i won't drive through in certain vehicles because i don't want to get followed home, it'll be the same everywhere... i'm quite "switched on" to potential problems wherever i go but i'm more nervous of it in cities i don't know.

You know what they say:
“Never bring a knife to a torch fight”
I’m constantly amazed at the apparently overwhelming percentage of the PH community who are apparently trained martial artists with a set of special skills and the ability to fight off groups of determined muggers under any and all circumstances.
Well... i'm a member of the PH community, and have trained kickboxing for years (my health app shows about 5000 hours of training, so quite extensive)...“Never bring a knife to a torch fight”

we regularly do self defence as a "special lession" and the number one technique is - get out of the situation if you can. use your training as a means to make your escape if needs be. To willingly engage with a group of more than likely armed attackers is asking for injury/death

It's a sorry state of affairs when a public campaign like this is needed (even if it may also double as an advertising opportunity!
That's not a 'public' campaign though. It's a private firm doing it.Edited by JamieBeeston on Saturday 22 October 17:12
But I see your point. It's not ideal. Though I would say that it's become the new crime story that everybody has latched onto. A nice distraction from the explosion in gun and knife crime in the capital since the summer.

I would have thought the two were vaguely connected.
No, the papers aren't overly fussed it seems with the number of gang members that are killing each other this year.Normal people aren't usually caught up in shootings and stabbings.
That's why the events on Bishopsgate last month got so much coverage, it was normal people being hurt.
Unless you're actively involved in criminality, it's very unlikely you'll be deliberately shot or stabbed.
That's not to say it's not organised criminality targeting watches, it more than likely is, but very rarely are weapons used (doesn't mean they aren't being pointed or threatened with) against the victims, in my experience anyway.
Personally I'd happily bury the scum on the bikes in the front of my XC90/X5 but I've been told that not proportional to the crime. Which I think is bks as it certainly doesn't take into account traumatic experience it is or can be for the victims.
32 year old chap out with friends on his birthday near St Pauls, London, killed for his fake Patek Philippe watch. The doorman of the restaurant saw it on his wrist and phoned associates to come and rob him.
This should be a lesson to everyone who thinks wearing a fake is a good way to avoid being robbed of a real watch. You won't lose your real watch, but you'll still be killed.

Shard End, B'ham. One of the areas I used to hang around in my youth around 30 years ago, and wasn't the sort of place you would sensibly wear a Rolex even then unfortunately. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/familys-trib...
Take care out there all.

Dreadful. As above - for what? A watch FFS.
It's the equivalent of walking down the street with £5k+ in your hand unfortunately. More than enough for certain people to do pretty much anything these days.Edited by SWoll on Friday 17th March 19:26
When I worked in London 5 days a week I used to just wear an apple watch for this exact reason.
Now I'm working for fun, I only come down for a few days a month and I use it an excuse to wear one of my more desirable (to thiefs) watches, however I am flying down tomorrow and this has reminded me that its just not worth the risk.
It'll be an Apple Watch I wear down....
