I've seen eBay authorise fake trainers. Me I would get it certified by independent.

So if you send a genuine Rolex to them and receive a superclone back, what the hell do you do?

I'd only buy via ebay if I can go and see such an item in person before buying. Use ebay for the connection to buy or sell, but still do it in person?

They cover that scenario, so it won’t happen.
“ In order for a refund to be processed, all returns must be sent to the authentication partner for verification (to check that the item is still in the same condition and has all relevant accessories, or that the item is not consistent with the listing) and re-authentication before the item is returned to the seller.”

I sold a Tudor this way. Other than a couple of days extra wait for the money, it made the whole thing easier as it removes any doubts or arguments. As it happens I think my buyer was a good guy and there’d have been no problem anyway, but in the past I’ve been bitten on other things (sold a laptop, buyer claimed I’d sent them a brick!!) etc so anything that insulates me as a seller (or buyer) from the potential nightmare of dealing with people is good with me.

Are there similar services, available outside of eBay? Private seller to private buyer, utilising some kind of trusted third party, authentication service?

My Pelagos 39 sold over the weekend so I posted it to eBay yesterday for authentication, it was delivered to them at 11am and then by 2pm I had a notification to say it was ok. Funds being paid to me tomorrow.

Couldn’t have been easier and no risk of the buyer trying to mess me around.

I actually sold when it was 80% off final seeking fees and the buyer used a 10% off watches code so they probably lost £250 on this transaction

Used as a seller half a dozen times. I keep buyers as in the loop as I can and explain the process to them clearly and set expectations on delivery times and responsibility at each step. Always had a great response and pain free. Highly recommend even if the address is weird.

I listed an unwanted (impulse buy) watch on Friday, 3k, 80% off the fees.
I was in some doubt, so it’s as it appears?!
£70 odd to sell, then free authentication & onward delivery, is a bit of a bargain!

I've bought a watch via this service, comes with a waxed paper seal around the strap, and you can't return the watch once removed.
I just took one of the links out so I could properly try it on without breaking the seal. The spring bars on the end links defeated me.
