Just spotted this thread. Does anyone else use vintage fountain pens? I usually have a Parker 51 and an old Conway Stewart on my desk at work and a few more at home.

Pencils not pens but I took delivery today of a Rotring 500 and a selection of Uni Kuro Togo pencils.

The Kuru's are amazing in that they cost peanuts and are Japanese engineering taken to a stupid degree i.e. "The lead gets flatter as you write, what can we do?" and whilst mere mortals might have stopped at "Turn the pencil as you write" they went and developed a whole clutch/gear mechanism that turns the lead by a tiny fraction each time it hits the paper.

They cost £4 off Amazon, I ordered them last night, they were delivered today on a Sunday, the world has gone mad in a good way smile
I love a mechanical pencil and these sound great. I will be ordering one of these.

Digging out my cupboard on the weekend I found a gift I was given many years ago, it's a Mont Blanc Chopin Hommage fountain pen with box, paperwork, CD and slip saying I can get the pen customised at any Mont Blanc shop.

I never gave it much thought as I'm not a 'pen guy' but what's something like that worth?

It's a Montblanc PIX ballpoint and is the entry level pen for Montblanc, but I like it for its simple lines.

If it’s a ballpoint, then ‘entry level’ doesn’t matter because it uses the same refill as any other Mont Blanc. Whereas fountain pens nibs can differ.

Holy thread revival Batman etc etc, but i was hoping fro some advice...

The OH is going back to University (Oxford University, no less) to undertake a second Masters. As such, i would like to buy her a fountain pen. She has a few already but rarely uses them as she has very small handwriting and typically finds that fountain pens don't write finely enough to make her tiny letters clear. So i have two queries:

1. Any suggestions as to a fountain pen that may write finely enough; or
2. Suggestions as to any particularly good shops to go to where i might be able to find one myself. I'm in Birmingham City Centre, Cheltenham and London (around Liverpool Street Station) fairly regularly so any recommendations in those areas would be great.

Thanks!

Good luck.
As stated, the fountain pen thread is a massive source of info, but we can suggest a few without you having to trawl that entire archive.

There have been lots of Mont Blanc pens mentioned above. MB are wonderful pens, beautifully made and great to write with, but they're also a bit of a status symbol and therefore bought in a "Look at this, I'm rich" sort of way. Your GF may or may not want something that's as easily recognised.

My choice when this sort of question gets asked is Pelikan. They are absolutely brilliant pens adn beautifully made too. Top end M800 is c. £400 too, much less than the equivalent MB (the 149)

Also consider Graf von Faber Castell - the upper tier of the (very good) Faber Castell pens.

Depends on your budget too - for c. £50 you can get a Lamy Studio or something nice from Twsbi - translucent barrel means you can see the ink sloshing around inside which is cool. I have two TWSBI pens and they're among my favourites.

Look at www.cultpens.com for more ideas smile

Currently using this lovely Breitling pen.

Not sure if it’s actually made by Breitling but it’s a high quality item.

I have used Penfriend in Burlington Arcade and The Pen Shop in Leadenhall Market but this won't help as both have recently closed.

Mont Blanc have a store at Royal Exchange which is a 5 minute walk from Liverpool St Station otherwise I would suggest John Lewis or Selfridges which will be a few stops on the Central Line.

Have you considered a rollerball? Many come with the option of a very fine refill which may suit. Most of the top pen makers will have one or more in their range.

Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated. To answer a couple of the questions, i was looking at something in the up-to-£200 range. She isn't one for fancy things and gets grumpy when i spend a lot of money on them for her (life could be worse smile). Hence the emphasis on finding the correct fine-writing pen as she would appreciate how it writes far more than its actual value.

For various reasons it really needs to be a fountain pen rather than a rollerball or other options, much as as i love my own Cross rollerball.
