Hello watch experts smile

I am looking for a new watch for work purposes. Cheap but also a talking point for customers should they notice it.

I notice an early 1960's 214 can be picked up for as little as £300 but as already mentioned due to age the battery can be a headache. Can anyone recommend any reputable online specialists I can buy these watches from?

I love a hummer, but seem to not have any men's Accutron's since my father in law snatched my last one, and I just sold a Accuquartz. I've got these though that you don't see every day.

I had a beautiful example of the Ultronic, but I was persuaded to part with it.

It's the only watch I have sold that I miss.

I have a pair of Bulova 'Accutrons', but one isn't a hummer smile

My first Bulova, which I still own. It's the only watch in my collection that looked better in the pictures than in real life, the 96B12:

Still a nice piece though for £99 and the sweeping seconds is rather fabulous.

Apologies for the pasty arm. My gut feeling is it isn't an original Spaceview (apparently most aren't!) but I like it and cannot stop holding it to my ear for the hum smile

Here is the Mad Men Accutron pitch for those that have never seen it.

Here is my prized Spaceview, I've had it since new. I bought it with my first months salary when I got my first proper job.
Still have the original box etc Although I now collect watches and pens worth infinitely more I would go into my burning house to get this one.
The Croydon Service Centre recently replaced a few parts around the tuning fork and got it working/humming like it should.

Does the ana-digi also count?
I picked one up for $99 when a US tv site was selling them off.
I believe the movement is used in some higher end watches too.

I still have this. Wonderful little time piece and they seem to be climbing in value now smile I would guess I’ve made £150-£200 in just under two years. Probably the only thing I’ve ever made money on, lol.

Love explaining the story behind the movement and lack of face when they ask and I’ve had people wearing £8k Rolex’s getting super excited when they see it on my arm.

The only downsides are it’s so loud I have to wrap it in a hankie and put it in a draw as the humming keeps me awake at night! Also sourcing a replacement battery was a bit of a nightmare (in the end I had to order one off eBay from Europe!)

Hi Nelson,

I'm looking at getting a space view, may I ask how easy is it to read the face?

I'm looking at spending no more than £500 max, watching a few on ebay and chrono 24. some go for £1100!

are they loud?

Holy thread revival 2!

Yes they’re fine but to be honest you tend to look at the background first...it’s more interesting than whatever the time is. I was looking at a colleague’s collection of accutrons this week.

If you put it on the bedside table and lay in bed, you will be vaguely aware of a faint weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee in the background, but generally you won't notice the sound.

I have a few Accutrons and they are nicely made watches. I would wear them more if they didn't get through batteries so quickly.

Strangely, I like the look of the spaceview ones, and the mechanism, but it may be hard to read the time. where as the non spaceview ones of that ear look better, for time reading.

I have seen one on Ebay where someone (I think a 4 year old) has hand painted the white markers on the dome glass.....

If someone has hand painted the crystal, chances are it started life as a normal Accutron with a dial and someone has removed it to make it look like a Spaceview.

Here's a good guide to help tell the difference between an original and a conversion:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~fotoplot/accspace.htm

I don't have any problems reading the time on mine, but I have fairly good eyesight. It would be easier to read the time on a Spaceview than on a watch with silver hands on a silver or white dial.
