I grew up in Codicote (one mile north of Welwyn), went to school in Hitchin and have lived in St.Albans for 13 years.

Best places are St.Albans, Harpenden which are expensive. I'd look at the villages if you want more value, Codicote, Welwyn, Kimpton, Whitwell or Wheathampstead.

That way you're still close to Hatfield.
Having grown up in Kimpton (my parents still live there) I would not class it as affordable in any way.

Born and bred St Albans here and enjoyed the market and Cathedral this morning, but having lived in Cambridgeshire for 10 years, I'm now back renting in Harpenden for 12 months. Inaccurate council tax calcuations and a parking ticket for using the pub car park when I actually went into the pub was my welcome back :-). They are both pleasant places but they are ludicrously over priced and over rated. I don't know how people afford to buy houses here. I very much doubt I shall be staying when my 12 months is up. Much rather be nearer the coast.

Glad you found somewhere suitable though.

As per my post the villages are more affordable the St.Albans or Harpenden.

I lived in ware for a year when I was 20. This was a nice little village, a few decent pubs. River for messing about on. Close to Hertford, also a nice place.
