IIRC it was refurbed around the end of last year. Ate at The Dragon in St Ippolyts a few times recently. It's on the road between Codicote and Hitchin. Excellent Chinese food and they're very proud of the fact they don't use MSG.
Bizarre setting as the decor is still very much that of a Public House (they've even got a plaque above the fireplace commemorating the Charles and Diana wedding!).
I've had both their regular and buffet menu and would recommend them both.

I'm also pretty certain that I saw them opening a pack of pre-made pasta (It looked remarkably like Sainsbury's) and while its lovely, I can have that at home for £2.

A friend took me there at the beginning of the year and I really liked it. I do always order the same thing though so you could be right about the rest of the menu!
I like the atmosphere and family run vibe.
Haha shame if you did see that, having an open kitchen slightly backfiring.

The Fox would be my fist choice, on the A1081 between Harpenden and Luton Hoo. Not 100% sure if dogs are allowed, but nice place for lunch.The OH and I have to take her Mum out for Sunday lunch in/near Harpenden soon.
Can anyone recommend somewhere good - that also allows dogs?

If you're in Harpenden, while its not flash, I've always liked the food and the welcome at The Old Cock Inn.
Again, not sure about dogs but wouldn have thought so, they're that kind of pub.

Another vote here for The Fox. Along the same lines (I think it's actually run by the same company) I would suggest The Wicked Lady outside Wheathampstead. Again, not sure if they allow dogs.offspring86 said:

Cheers chaps - apparently the OH's mum got food poisoning at the Fox some years ago and flatly refuses to go there again - even if it's completely different people, food, etc.So we're going to the Wicked Lady instead!
No dogs allowed, but apparently there's a large common we can go for a walk on nearby to burn off some pudding and let the mutt stretch her legs after being cooped in the cage whilst we scoff.Pork said:

We are converging from different parts of the country and this is the best area to meet up.
Looking for 2 or 3 old-world type pubs with decent beer, and food in one or somewhere else (curry would be fine), to spend the afternoon drinking and remenicing without inturruption from wives telling us to stop drinking
- What do you suggest.

Got a couple of old boozers - The Cross Keys and the Silver Cup, both proper old school boozers (Cross Keys has old silver tankards hanging up, still in use!).
There's a couple of hotels (I think the Silver Cup is a hotel too) and there's a few curry houses, a Thai and a Chinese. Just off the M1 too, with good rail connections if some of you arent driving.
Went to The Wagonners in Ayot Green last night. They have a wine tasting evening once a month that my parent's have been raving about. It was fantastic, £45 a head, you start with a bubbly when you arrive and then have 4 different wines throughout your meal that compliment the food you are eating (1 white, 2 reds and a dessert wine). The food was excellent, as were the wines offered.

There's a new restaurant now open in Berkhamsted that's definitely worth checking out - it's called Bluebella Roo's (down a small road opposite Tesco).
Been a few times now, and the food is superb. It only seats a maximum of 18 and gets booked up in advance, but the service is friendly, it's reasonably priced and I'm yet to have something that isn't wonderfully done.
