We've got a Tabure in Berkhamsted.

The food is pretty good. What lets it down is that they serve it tapas-style, so dishes arrive as they're ready and given the menu, that doesn't really work - you end up finishing with something that should be an accompaniment to another dish.

Plus the service at ours is pretty dreadful.

I really want it to get better. I'll try it again soon to see if it has.

I've fairly recently moved to Baldock. I had Sunday lunch at the Old White Horse and it was excellent. Pizzas there are very good too.

Any recommendations for other good local restaurants?

A couple of decent curry houses - Chilli Lounge and the Lancer. There's a good brunch-late lunch place called Taste. Some of the other pubs do, er, pub food. The George is Sunday roast fare.

If your definition of local includes Letchworth and Hitchin, you've got a lot more choices, including some that are better.

The Black Horse at Ireland used to be a good localish outing ( https://blackhorseireland.com/ ) - but not been in a few years. Driving distance, the Fox at Willian ( http://www.foxatwillian.co.uk/ ) - again not been there in a while.

FML

Being in Baldock, you can easily get the train to Letchworth which has a few options.

Less than 10 miles away is the Fox at Willian - very, very good.

PS - If you're new to Baldock you need to know about Chapmans Butchers - teaser video from a few weeks ago - https://www.facebook.com/ChapmansButchers/videos/1...

I guess we typed pretty much at the same time - spooky to mention the same place - we used to frequent the Black Horse when we lived in Meppershall.

Another good place, although not been there for a while, was http://www.redcoats.co.uk/ . Also hear good things about the Japanese in Hitchin.

Welcome to the area.

Horse, I meant the Horse.

Redcoats is now owned by the people who own The Fox. They also have the Hermitage in Hitchin.

Just next door is The Hermit of Redcoats which isn't owned by them (yet) and does good gastro pub food. Not exactly local to Baldock though.

Visited there last Friday, really great food!

I'm originally from Kimpton so know the Harpenden, St Albans and Hitchin are very well. The Hermit of Redcoats has been our go to Sunday roast restaurant for a few years, not just be cause of the food but because they are exceptionally accommodating with my wheelchair bound older sister who has Cerebral Palsy.

Thanks for the recommendations guys! I'll be checking them all out over the coming months!

I did order Chinese from Eat Well a few weeks ago, utterly dreadful. I ended up throwing 3/4 of it away.

Ah, so you probably know more about the places West of Baldock than I do then!

So, how about looking Eastwards? There's the very good Bushel and Strike in Ashwell (and two other pubs if memory serves, and Ashwell's a nice little place to visit). There's The Bull at Cottered, with the added attraction of a drive along the A507 - which can be fun, or the Sword Inn Hand at Westmill, which is excellent. Or even further East is the Cricketers in Clavering, Jamie Oliver's folk's place.

Or come over to Much Hadham and sample my local, The Bull, or the Fox and Hounds up the road in Hunsdon.

Yes, but that road can be bloody dangerous if you don't know it.

Those 90 degree bends have caught a lot of people out.

Btw, not been in the Bull for over 30 years!

I've been meaning to try The Bull in Cottered, I pass it every morning and evening on my commute (I agree, the 507 is excellent fun when empty!). I may have o give it a try this weekend following the good reviews!

My nephew visited and stayed over this weekend and insisted on having fish and chips for dinner. Picked it up from Fish'n'Chick'n, it wasn't half bad!

They have quite a few outlets across the area - and won a few awards too - the one in Stortford is usually very good. Check out their website - quite extensive for a chippy!

Half Moon in Hitchin, proper old-fashioned pub. Great beer, good atmosphere, and no-nonsense 'English tapas'. Best pub in the area, imo.

The Fox is top end food, probably rather more ambitious and correspondingly expensive than the others mentioned. I haven't sampled Redcoats yet but I believe that's going to be similar. Anglian Inns do know what they're doing that's for sure. (Fox, hermitage , Redcoats, the Cricketers in Weston) -all theirs, all very good though very different.

Had an excellent dinner recently at the Grapevine restaurant in Letchworth. Very good Turkish food, lively atmosphere. One of several new eating and drinking places that are transforming Letchworth - good to see at last.
Been meaning to go there. We're reasonably spoiled compared to 2002 when we moved to the area.
Finally went there this evening, enjoyable. Will visit again.

The Kings Arms in Berko - pretty good pub food for sensible money.....the Pork Belly roast is great, and two of us with a couple of drinks comes in under £60.....

Have paid same or more locally (Yes, Prezzo, Im looking at you ) for much worse......

After a period of nearly a year without a pub in the village ACI have also just taken over the Lytton Arms in Old Knebworth which I am very much looking forward to. Sadly the old Landlord passed away early last year, and with The Station closed as well the only place for a beer is the golf club or curry house!

The Lytton used to have a fine range of ales but was very dated inside and the food was mediocre at best. According to my wife's family it used to be a great place in the 90's and was always teeming with punters at the weekend. Hopefully they can get the right mix of good pub food and keep the real ale element. Judging by their efforts elsewhere it should be excellent!

It'll be great to see it open again, I used to love cycling over there in the summer for a pint. The building itself is stunning to look at.

Thanks for the recommendations recently everyone, I met up with my sister and parents for Sunday lunch at the Fox at Willian yesterday. Excellent food and a good selection of beer. We'll be sure to visit there again soon.
