Possibly a re-post but interesting none the less.

The future replacement for the C-130 transport/gunship looks very interesting. Especially as it looks to employ a fair bit of stealth tec.

My prediction - 20 years from now the C-130 will still be in production.

I have to say I agree.

That said, I reckon we'll see a very high stealth VTOL / STOL transport aircraft that can be used for inserting SF forces into hostile territory. The Bin Laden raid and the failed SBS raid do point to a need and I'm not sure a Helo is fast enough and can be maid stealthy enough.

Not knowing anything about this kind of thing, but don't they just do these high altitude jumps and parachute for a few miles if they want to get in somewhere quietly?

Looking at the size of those engines, I'd say that's going to be none-too-stealthy!

Your post mentioned insertion.

Regardless, I'd have thought once the shooting match was over and the dust had settled, the need for stealth would not be such a prerequisite? Just supposition on my part though....

Isn't that what the V-22 is used for? I know it's not stealth but it's faster and has the range advantage over a helicopter.

I like insertion hehe

Depends on the mission. The way the world is going it is not difficult to foresee the 'need' to insert and recover a sizeable team of SF to carry out some dodgy task with the minimum of fuss. Iran nuclear facility for example or 3rd world airports, etc.

Something that is difficult to track would be an advantage then as it would reduce the chance of being intercepted on the way back out. You may not have the luxury of having the dust settle without committing to a full scale invasion.

Even if you were to use rely on a HALO jump, radar will pick up an unauthorised intrusion into airspace unless your drop aircraft is suitably stealthy.

Of course it's all Tom Clancy stuff but interesting to debate nonetheless.

I would be very surprised if the Phantom works are not looking at a stealth version of the V-22 or something even bigger.

After all it's the holy grail of warfare. Get in, do job, get out, anywhere in the world, without being detected. Plausible deniability and all that.

With the revelation from the bin laden raid that their is a silent and stealth version of the blackhawk, it is wholely possible that their is also stealth/silent versions of the v-22 and/or ch-47.

The problem being that these are so expensive and complex they are beyond mass production.

And really, what need is there for a stealth freighter? Looking at all the mission profiles the C-130 is used for, how many of them require flying into enemy territory, where we don't have air superiority, unescorted?

This is likely to be the answer to a question only the congressman for the district containing this factory will be asking.

Does seem a bit of an odd one. I would have said the main threats to a transport aircraft like the C-130 would be man portable sams, with the main risk area being takeoffs and landings. On that basis the radar signature is going to be huge anyway because the landing gear will be down.

As for heat seekers well, anything that helps mask the heat signature would be grand.

Well it's being tested in a huge wind tunnel, so someone is spending serious money on it.
If it's not a C130 replacement, what is it ?

(and with those huge blades at the front it's as stealthy as my arse)
