It's worse than that, it was actually the local paper which started that line of questioning. Of all the rags that you'd think would show some support to the armed forces...
Knowing the crap our local rag puts out, I'm not in the least bit surprised, unfortunately
On the local rags Facebook an ex matelot and QHM was spinning dit’s of it never happening in his long serving career. You’d have thought he’d have learnt not to speculate during that time!

You can almost guarntee the same kind of question would be asked on here though by another half wit.

Also is complete half-wit a bit of an oxymoron?

The Pompey evening news? I'm not surprised, that's been a rag with stty journalism for well over 20 years now.

It actually said "The navy had initially planned for it to sail without any of the crew being tested beforehand."

Just to clear up the confusion, HMS QNLZ was due to sail next week on the 28th for further trials and training. It has been decided to push that date back by a few days to allow the entire crew to be tested for Covid-19.

Up until now the crew have been isolating either on board or at home. The captain is authorised to return to port early should an outbreak occur. It will be interesting to see how this group of mainly young and fit personnel get on in such a controlled environment with regards to coronavirus.

You've never met a matelot have you? smile

No enforced exercise + limited time in the sun + cheap beer. Then structure your life around intense period of work, split up by foreign "holidays" with your mates.

There's been an annual fitness test since about 2001. Before then I'd agree, some huge, very unfit matelots about, only needed to get fit for promotion / leadership courses. smile

I've met a lot of very unfit looking Commanders, is there a rank at which they stop having to do fitness tests?

I meant in the mess. Unless things have changed it was cheap, and you were allowed to buy it on a tab (which got deducted from your pay).

You could also get cheap RN (blue liners) cigarettes. I was never a smoker but as I understand it they had such a low tobacco to sawdust ratio they were not technically cigarettes smile

Utterly pathetic to the point of being pedantic in a retarded way though. I wholeheartedly agree that a Captain of his responsibility and stature needs to be above board in all matters and so censured in this instance accordingly as rules were apparently broken.

However, to lose his Captaincy on this ship over it? Ridiculous! If someone is deemed to have the quality required to lead a flagship into war - and by that I mean the capability to make the right decisions in combat - then to lose such a person's ability over such a relatively trivial - and yes, it is trivial in the grand scheme of things - is retarded.

Good to know though, I guess, that the UK can afford not to use its 1st choice Captain in a conflict situation on account of his wife using a Ford Galaxy without permission! Moronic - and I don't care who disagrees! biggrin
Tend to agree, but no doubt there is more to this than has been made public.

Our company cars were insured for anyone in the company, and their families.
This came up in a virtual pub quiz last night and got me wondering all over again. I don't want to reopen the debate about the rights and wrongs of sacking someone over expenses, but was there something else to this?

(I did Google first, and didn't find much. It turns out he ended up here).

Typical lightweight Navy sized tin of export, you should have joined the RAF, we had full size tins, by the slab. biggrin

I got bladdered with the Captain and a friend on board the German Navy Corvette Braunschweig. They get free beer supplied by the brewery from the town it is named after. Apparently that is standard practice in their Navy. They had also got a load of Guinness in, which they were drinking mixed with Port. Yuck.

I was a Senior Rate so we had a proper bar with beer on draught (on board not just land bases) smile

Just remembered the main beer was Courage CSB which as far as I know was only available in the RN.

Blimey, that's an old photo! Blue liners were phased out in 1991 as an 'unhealthy' option.

You could only then get duty free cigarettes once outside the 12m limit, none allowed on shore bases. Unlike the other services. frown
