Just been having a chat with some of the guys in work, and happened to to mentioned the best ever pop record produced ("Club Tropicana", by Wham!). They pulled me back to this point ...

I believe Club Tropicana is, was, and always will be the best pop music record and video ever put out. They, sadly, are too young to see the beauty of the record.

Let me take you to the place where membership's a smiling face, brush shoulders with the stars. Where strangers take you by the hand, and welcome you to wonderland - from beneath their panamas... Club Tropicana, drinka are free; fun and sunshine, there's enough for everyone, all that is missing is the sea, but don't worry - you can sun tan.

I also believe that the second best pop record of all time is "Last Christmas" by Wham! which also has the second best video of all time.

I would point out that I am not a Wham! fan, just that these two pieces of music are, in my opinion, the best piece of pop music ever published.

Ha ha!

Good thread!

And I will admit to owning Wham!'s greatest hits album.

You laugh, but he's probably not wrong!

Club Tropicana is 100% pure pop through and through including the video, and Last Christmas is still one of the best known Christmas records in the world, wheeled out every Christmas with no sign of diminishing popularity at all!

So much fromage, so little space!

I do like a bit of pop.

You spin me right round, Dead or Alive https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGNiXGX2nLU

Don't leave me this way, Communards https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mlpxOaQinE

Cotton Eye Joe, Rednex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcDy8HEg1QY

However, Barbie Girl, Aqua is probably technically the greatest pop song. 16th greatest selling single in the UK! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyhrYis509A

As well as recognising how many (looks like over 120) people have re-recorded Last Christmas!

Hmm...Yeah, I know what you mean but I'd argue Mariah pips it for Christmas pop value.

There's a dozen pure pop contenders and I'd agree CT is definitely on the list. But I think you'd have to do it by decade or something as well. Katy Perry forex, is almost perfect in the sense of catchy hooks, simple song structures and light production but it's very 'now'.

I'm just laughing at the eccentric nature of the OP - I enjoyed it smile

Brilliant topic.

Of recent years there are a few that you can make a case for.

Taylor Swift - Trouble or Shake it off.
Both massive ear worms which is what good pop should be.

Loads of 80s stuff can make a claim for it.

Anyway IMO you cant top Single Ladies - Beyoncé. Just massively catchy and very very good.

Honourable mentions go to Crazy in Love, Anything the Neptunes did for Brittney Spears or Timberlake.

The best pop record of all time is Runaway by Del Shannon. The absolute definition of a pop record, just sublime.

"God only Knows" by the Beach Boys, in my opinion anyway, it's undeniably "pop" but a very complex piece of music and whilst on the face of it it's another 'lovey dovey' pop song again it seems much deeper if you look into it.

In cars terms, it's like a small hatchback made by Rolls Royce, a depth of quality be belies it's humdrum job.

Nope, you're all wrong.

It's 'Jump' by the Pointer Sisters. Not the rubbish cover by Girls Aloud.
