I heard what sounded like a very loud moped with a fart can exhaust go over this morning. Quickly had a look at FR, and lo and behold...
I used to see and hear that a lot. I lived near Farnborough Airport, and I'd be out cycling on the trails under the runway approach. Definitely a distinctive aircraft, both in sound, and in vision...yellowjack said:

That's the sound of my childhood, so reminiscent. They used to fly over us near St.Ives in Cambridgeshire all the time in the 1970s and 1980s. Even the sight of the thing with a single light in the midline is very nostalgic, and the jet noise as it cycles up and down.
Doing some Googling, it seems they were part of:
95th Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron 1991–1992 (RAF Alconbury, UK)
or the 9 SRW Detachment 4; RAF Mildenhall, UK 1976–1982
or 17th Reconnaissance Wing – RAF Alconbury, UK 1982–1991
For those who are into their 1970s/80s fast jets here is an interesting video, full CVR (ish) of an F4 ejection and SAR operation.

Yes I remember my dad taking me to Alconbury. They always had some interesting stuff: Phantoms, F5 Aggressor Squadron and the odd TR1 with accompanying ground crew.
We used to go to the USAF Mildenhall or Lakenheath airshowsThey really drove home what the USA spent on their airpower, compared to ours.
Saw F-117 and B2 stealth aircraft flying in close formation. Totally awesome and weird. F14 Tomcats and F15 Eagles, and A10 Warthog.
We also used to go to Truckfest and see Original Bigfoot. So as far as I was concerned America was truly the land of the Bald Eagles/Freedom/Yeehaww

17,000lbs of thrust, so not really crazy power at all by modern standards of dry power........its the airframe design as much as anything that gives it such a dramatic take off.Noisy buggers though

Was that scheduled as 20 hours?https://www.flightradar24.com/QFA7879/22d63a31
Not sure if this particularly interesting or unusual but it stood out to me.
Walking back from the shops I heard an odd noise overhead. A large plane was really low and climbing. Planes that low must have taken off from Cranfield but they are usually much smaller and this had 4 engines.
Found it on FR. It flew to Exeter airport, did a touch and go (that the right term) and flew back to Cranfield. The plane belongs to a small Canadian operator. What was it doing , some kind of test flight.?

The maintenance on their RJ100’s are done at Cranfield. Walking back from the shops I heard an odd noise overhead. A large plane was really low and climbing. Planes that low must have taken off from Cranfield but they are usually much smaller and this had 4 engines.

Probably as you say a test flight, they have used Cranfield before for maintenance work on their 4 engined Canadian Avro RJ100. Walking back from the shops I heard an odd noise overhead. Cool thanks both. Interesting plane, 4 engines , large tail fin, but not actually that big a plane.
Swiss used to operate them out of London City until fairly recently actually. Bloody awful things, climb like bricks with a terrible cruising speed. Still a few RJ85 operators out there, I can’t wait for them to be replaced.I live opposite Inverness Airport - 1mile across the water from it.
There's been quite late on some private jets landing that show no call signs, my friend who works for the ground handling crew was sending me snaps of blacked out Range Rovers waiting on the apron, then heading off without the passengers entering the terminal at all.
Always see odd activity late on into the night.

Try ADS-B exchange. The callsign/reg will be on there. There's been quite late on some private jets landing that show no call signs, my friend who works for the ground handling crew was sending me snaps of blacked out Range Rovers waiting on the apron, then heading off without the passengers entering the terminal at all.
