Caught doing 88MPH in a 50
Discussion
Had a letter informing me I was caught doing 88MPH in a 50MPH area on the M62 Westbound heading into Liverpool the other week ... I think it may have been this camera https://www.speedcamerasuk.com/database/NWM/nwm047...
Am I right in thinking 6 points and a hefty fine (up to 175% of my weekly net income) is best case scenario but there is a chance I could be banned for a small period of time? I've never had any points previously or attended a speed awareness course.

Way too fast for a speed awareness course. Too fast for a fixed penalty. You may anticipate court proceedings to be instituted.
The maximum is not dependent on your income. The maximum fine for speeding on a motorway is £2,500. The court can disqualify you from driving for any length of time, or endorse 3-6 penalty points.
Subject to the statutory maximum sentence, the court has guidelines to apply when deciding the appropriate sentence - although the court is entitled to depart from the relevant guideline.
You are liable for a Band C fine. If you plead guilty at an early stage then credit will be applied. In which case, the most likely fine is N and the sentencing range is N x ⅚ to N x 7/6 (where N is 100% of your net weekly income).
The guideline for driving at "76 mph and above" where the speed limit is 50 mph is "Disqualify 7-56 days or 6 penalty points."
You should try to deal with the initial hearing by post. You won't be disqualified if you are not present at the first hearing. If disqualification is to be considered then the court will contact you and you will have to attend.
There is a very high risk of disqualification in your case. Not inevitable though. You may even have a defence. I had a recent case where the CPS failed to secure a speeding conviction for a driver alleged to be moving at 113 mph.
Do you have any penalty point endorsements?

Income fines dont come into force until April 24th, so the maximum if you dont go to court is 1k iirc 2.5k on the motorway
Hmmm.Outside of court, the maximum is (and will be) a fixed penalty - currently 3 points & £100.
Maximum [court ordered] fines for excess speed will remain at £1,000 (non-motorway) and £2,500 (motorway) after 24 April 2017.
And court ordered fines are already income related - they have been for some time.
From 24 April 2017, and other than some new wording for the Magistrates to consider, it's the penalty guideline for the most serious cases of excess speed that's changing.

Correct and this was incredibly badly reported in the media. Confusion was introduced where there should be none. Expect further threads to emerge here as the tabloid press seizes the opportunity to further misreport this on or about Monday 24th April.Outside of court, the maximum is (and will be) a fixed penalty - currently 3 points & £100.

I've read ludicrous newspaper articles suggesting that:
- Fines will be income based (they are now)
- Fines will be increased to £2500 (they are already at this level)
- There is / will be a £100 minimum fine (there is actually no minimum fine)
- 35/30 mph and similar will soon mean an income based fine (It won't. It means a £100 fixed penalty)
- Many many other idiotic points. All simply made up, based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the system.
Thanks for some of the replies ... both helpful and witty!
Annoyingly is doesn't tell me which camera it was but it looks like it was actually this one judging by the description https://www.speedcamerasuk.com/database/NWM/nwm047... I'll fill in the relevent documents and contact the guy recommended further up in the replies if he is needed. No previous convictions etc and being relatively young still I imagine 6 points will be way more favourable than a short term ban for insurance purposes.
It's safe to say I'm royally stting myself
