I'm sure this has probably been done to death but which should I buy? An S or an R? I have been in a s1 exile many years ago and loved it. A mate took me for a spin in his 54 plate S again a few years ago now. But knowing me if I buy an S I will want to have the power of the R. I just wonder if a tuned S would end up being a better car than an R 04-06 redg models. I'm thinking the R would command more money when it was time to move it on. I'm not that familiar with Lotus yet so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

The extra power is slightly offset by the lighter 111s. The R is a bit heavier, albeit not much.

I prefer non-servo brakes of the k-series cars, no doubt the toyota cars are less temptemental!

Are you talking Toyota S or Rover 111S?

54 plate car would be Toyota wouldn't it?..

I had this same dilemma a few years back and chose the 111S.

Basically, the K series is more driveable throughout the rev range whereas the R benefits from being at the top of the rev range.
If you're on the road then S, if you want to track it then R.

What about an S tuned to make more power than an R? I know what I'm like and will end up wanting more.

Drive them both, for track work yes you may want more power. I have never really wanted for more power on the road in any of the Elise I've had.

Geometry, tyres and brakes are the best performance modification on an Elise. They are not about bhp numbers.

I think there was a bit of cross over, the 111r came out in 04 but the 111s went on to 05.

Visually, model numbering, exhaust exits and a few other minor bits.

my 05 plate 111s was one of the last off the production line, great car, ideal mix of power handling and weight.

Elise and Elise 111s are rover k series.
Elise S and Elise R are Toyota.

K series has a pair of widely spaced exhaust exits either side of the rear plate and no ABS.

Toyota powered cars have a pair of exhausts together under the rear diffuser.

As mentioned above, the Elise isn't about output. It's about finesse, turn in and flow.

Can you put it in to context for me as my mine is having difficulty computing that 156bhp is enough. 189 sounds more like it.
