Ukrainian Flanker confirmed for the flying display plus 1 more for the static and an IL-76 in Support.

I picked a decent year for my first RIAT smile
That flew over my place today, thought it was an airliner with RAF flanking until I checked flight radar. Red arrows came over about 30mins before too. Busy skies over south Northants today.

Different........not better though.

Mind you its 20 years since I've seen the T-Birds.

Blue Angels are better than the Thunderbirds.

It's the first time I've seen the Thunderbirds and after reading comments on various forums I was prepared to be disappointed but I really enjoyed their display.

They're not as slick as the Reds and there are gaps in the show but it's 6 F16s being thrown around which can never be a bad thing IMO.

If I was to have a complaint it would be about their commentary. It's VERY American. I thought I was trapped in a Team America sequel at one point hehe

Looking pretty good so far, especially in that light. What body and lens is it? I used an EOS20d/40d + 100-400L back when I went and was pretty pleased with a lot of shots.
Fuji X-T2 and the Fujinon 100-400mm.

I really enjoyed them, I felt they had tighter formations than the red arrows.

One crappy iPhone photo of them

Loved the RIAT, not been for many many years, and got to take the boy who loved it!

Agree about the commentary, but thats the US Military style (unlike the Chinook commentator) If you were there Sunday for the Reds, Red10 took the piss out of the Thunderbirds commentators style. Quite a refreshing change, and good to hear some friendly rivalry even from the commentators

But Fridays mixed Reds and T-Birds pass was great to see. Sat in a campsite, just slightly north of Runway 27, we sat and had a lot of the turns and run ins directly overhead. Magic

Managed to catch a few photos, most were too far away though, could do with a new lens for next time. The B2 was an absolute treat, could see it doing loops for about 5 mins before it did the fly past

The crowdline has moved back from the display line by quite a bit over the the years, sadly or sensibly depending on your perspective. In Greenham Common days you could get a reasonable pic with a 35mm SLR using a 200mm lens. Jet fighters were generally a bit bigger then too, which helped.

Loops?

That must have been spectacular to see.

Or did you really mean "circuits"?

Sadly struggling along with my ancient Canon 300D and 300mm lens doesn't get the best shots

Made a start on editing them, Being there early I caught some of the arrivals and rehearsals

It's quite common for airshow "acts" to take off and then enter a holding pattern (as the Americans say) before being called in to do their display.
