I know that it's still a long way off, but I am hearing some very exciting things about this.
There is apparently a "Royal Review" massed flypast on the Friday.
They are having to modify car parking as they have a lot more aircraft than usual to park.
Rumours of an A10 display, and also that the Americans are going to send representative aircraft from squadrons that were in service 100 years ago.
Also an RAF F35B

Friday's going to be a full display day too.

Pricing on tickets is now based on an allocation basis instead of time limited. Got my super early bird tickets already. There seems to be a proper for a third party hosted campsite too as an alternative to an expensive hotel.

Should be an epic weekend.

I’m getting paid to watch planes fly. No fences. No laddder morons.

Airside, an unobstructed view with just a 3 foot picket fence.

Sorted.

I think it won't just been the weekend. Lots of stuff going on, 2018 is going to be a vintage year for aviation me thinks.

We will hopefully be arriving on the campsite Thursday and leaving Monday. This year we did the same and went into the airfield on Friday and Saturday and intended to spend Sunday watching the show from the campsite, but then the B2 turned up on the Sunday so I had to go and stand at the fence with all the weirdos wink.

This year I think we are going in for the complete weekend as there are hints that each day will be different.

Thought i'd re-surface an old thread rather than start a new one.

Bought tickets for Sunday, never been before. Really looking forward to it.a

Travelling from Essex, so a good 2h 30m away on a normal day.

I had a quick gander at hotels last night (yep, might as well forget that one).
Getting our kids out the house normally precludes us from leaving at silly o'clock, that said i'm not too bothered if i miss an hour or so of displays and just arrive later. Just wanted to get the craic of what to expect and what the best route in is?

All wisdom most welcome!

2 hour drive for us, we could not get hotels close and even further away, 1/2 hour from home, the hotels were bonkers prices. This means we get up at 4. Last few times has been worth it though as you get in, have a wander, munch on some good food (if you find it) and get a spot to watch the fun.

We aim to get in to the car park at 7 and then there are people queues waiting for gates open. Heard of nasty car tail backs later in the day so never wanted to get caught in them. We stay till the end, not sure that getting out early is a guarantee to get to the motorway early. We just accept it will be a long drag back to the M4 so stay to the end.

Hotel prices were already bonkers last August for this year's dates so no surprise there.

I'm relying on an Airbnb booking made last August 10 miles away and praying it doesn't get cancelled...

Mistake we made when in the general standing areas was no chairs or groundsheet.

Personal choice and all that.

What's the best way in?... roads around it look like blue cheese so guessing there are multiple options (or not)

Are some closed off during the event?

Follow the routes that will be well signposted. There a few cross country routes that avoid the traffic however those in the know keep them quiet!!

Traffic will be awful.

I’m lucky. Have to be on-site by 6.30am so very little traffic at that time.

Pretty much follow the paths for the direction you are coming from, early in and I have not had an issue.

Many seem to go prepared and have breakfast in the car park waiting for the gates to open.

PS. root around the food stalls, I have had some great nosh. I accept it will a tad more expensive but there are some duds.

I buy on the day, it save prep and carrying it around or going back to the car to get it.

I was on the campsite last year when they arrived in formation with the support transport, very impressive.

Nothing will top Anatoly Kvochur's arrival in the Su-27 with his accompanying transport at Boscombe Down Air Tattoo back in '92 biggrin
